“A lovely restful place to stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 January 2012

I enjoyed my time at the distinction, and was pleasantly surprised when the upgraded our room for free! This room had a spa bath and so was a real bonus. The room (superior river view) was well appointed, spacious, and had a balcony overlooking the river and hills. We also paid to have breakfast included which made the start for each day a lot more simple and kept us well feed. The staff where always helpful and polite. Also for those of you not willing to spend $30 on a taxi from town you can use the local Connectabus service to get a bus out to the hotel and this will cost about $9 (you catch a number 9 bus to Arthur's point and tell the driver the name of your hotel).

Room Tip: Note if you don't have a river view room you are probably facing the car park, entrance area.

We spent our last night at this property after a six day/five night trip to the South Island of NZ. It was our fourth place to stay (I'm writing the other reviews next) and without a doubt it was our favourite.

So the accommodation...

We stayed in a Garden view suite which was I think the least expensive room but it had a King bed (I'm 193cm and found it very comfy), it was very clean and had a nice balcony with the sound of a large fountain when you sat outside. The TV was small-ish but in fairness you are not coming to Queenstown to watch TV. There was a DVD player and you can get DVD's from reception for free. On that topic there is a large cinema room with a huge screen where you can watch what you want in any of a number of comfy couches. The bathroom was very clean and had all the small amenities you'd expect in a really decent property (sewing kits, shower caps, show shines etc). The room also had it's own couch, desk, table etc.

The restaurant...

We are vegetarians so while the starters were great the mains were fine (vege tarts were a little small but came with salad and mash) and the tart itself wasn't really hot but that is being picky. Our server, Dante, was great and put some romantic tango music on for us which was a nice touch (and beat listening to James Blunt). To finish the cheese platter was pretty tasty. And the view out the window during dinner was fantastic - river view, mountains in the background etc.

The Spa...

Per the other reviews the Spa was amazing (even if the hot tub wasn't working) - there is a great steam room, sauna, multiple showers, decent pool and it was really relaxing. The whole environment is done in a mosaic style which was pretty cool - as are the views of mountains out the windows. You can hire the entire place to yourself too!

The staff...

The three staff (Andrew, Dante and Anna) we met were fantastic - really helpful, friendly and welcoming. Definitely the nicest people that we encountered in all of the places we stayed at in NZ (which is saying a lot as the other places had friendly staff too - just not as uber helpful).

The other facilities...

There is a decent gym, tennis court, indoor squash court, cinema room and of course the spa - we're booked in for a few treatments tomorrow. There didn't appear to be a lift but in fairness if you can't cope with a few stairs to get to the first floor then you're in trouble if you're planning any walking in NZ. The place is a few miles from Queenstown but to be honest the peace and quiet is great and it's less than five-ten minutes drive into town.

In summary would definitely recommend the place and will stay here again.

We had a 2 night stay here in the Shotover Suite on a 1/2 price GrabOne voucher. For $200 NZD/night, it was reasonable value for money. If I had paid the listed rate (400/night), I would have been very annoyed. The hotel is lacking the usual standards of housekeeping and maintenance. Examples include a non-functioning, dirty spa tub on the balcony with a collapsed cover, green mildew in the toilet brush holder, loose roofing steel outside the window that rattles in the breeze, a very slow drain in the shower and a non-functioning drain plug in the bath tub, the fountain in the parking lot has partially collapsed in to the pool (and it looked like it had been that way for awhile!), spider webs on the balcony railings, the carpet on the threshold of the bathroom doorway is pealing back -- well, you get the idea.

The staff seemed kind & well-intentioned, perhaps just overwhelmed?

It is a bit of a shame really as the hotel is nicely situated on a bend of the Shotover River, well away from the bustle of Q-town. Someone spent a bunch of money on the Spa area with beautiful tiled pool, steam room & sauna -- and a big hot tub (alas, also out of service)

If they ever get the hotel up to the same standard as the spa, then it would be a "luxury hotel of distinction". It was woefully short of that standard on our visit.

Having had the booking for more than 3 months, we were expecting all and more that the website showed. At no time did anyone email or call to say that things were broken and/or couldn't be used or xtra needed paying for use.

We had booked the shotover suite as it was the honeymoon one but when we got there we were very dissappointed. The private spa pool looked like it hadn't been working in months - leaves, dirt, empty etc - the wardrobe looked like it was a storage cupboard with loads of sheets, electric blankets shoved in it so no room for clothes and the gas fire didn't work. I complained to the receptionist, who just shrugged and said she didn't think the spa was working. She helpfully came up with me to take away all the stuff from the wardrobe. I decided to have a spa bath but there was no hot water. It really didn't look like the room had been used in ages. I was nearly in tears by this time. My husband went down this time to complain (no lifts btw and we didn't know this!) and then things got better. They moved us to the Presidential suite - gave us a pass to use the spa shower and turned the gas fire on. The view was spectacular. The spa pool didn't work in this room either but what a fabulous room. Beautiful bathroom, amazing old furniture. Had such a wonderful feel to it.

The staff were minimal but very helpful and friendly and seem to do all different jobs. Breakfast was good. The spa area was fabulous but at $800 per night for the suite we were in you don't expect to have to pay another $75 for 1hr 30min to use the pool, sauna, steam. Should be included. Treatment I had was fantastic. I have stayed in many Distinction branded hotels and they have all lived up to their name. This one didn't. No porter, no lift, gardens messy. The staff also seemed to live on site so were often walking around in their civies which wasn't a good look. Also had their friends over, which again wasn't what you would expect to see in a upmarket hotel. You will need a car or use the bus as it is around 8km out of Queenstown but for us that was a positive as it was quite and peaceful.

This hotel has so much going for it but is let down by the little things. If we had been paying full price, we probably would have left. The owners need to put some money into tidying up the place, getting more staff and updating their website.

In the end we did have a great stay and the staff really did make it possible. They are a credit to the hotel and have to be on the front line which I expect isn't easy.

Room Tip: Take one of the rooms overlooking the shotover river. Otherwise you just get a view of the carpark.

Thank you for your review on Trip Advisor, I am pleased that you generally enjoyed the stay giving us 4 out of 5 and found the staff helpful and friendly.

It is unfortunate that a few maintence issues impacted on your stay. These are currently being worked through, and a new customer satisfaction system has been put in place with great enthusiasm from our new management team.

Assisted by your feedback, we have decided to make the Spa Suite available to hotel guests at no extra charge, and the hot water system has been replaced. General maintance has been improved and staffing levels structured to match the lodge like atmosphere of the property.

We have also made some great changes made to the Spa at Nugget Point, Alisha our Spa manager has been working hard on recruiting and upskilling her fabulous staff so as to make it the best masaage and beauty theropy team in Queenstown – no easy feat given the strong competition but with the amazing feedback we are getting on the spa treatments locally we feel we are there.

Once again I appreciate your feedback, it is very useful as we seek to improve our offering, we look forward to welcoming you back to experience the even better Nugget Point Boutique Hotel and Spa.

Kind regards,

Distinction Management.

On arrival at Nugget Point the manager, Archie, advised us that our room had been upgraded --- what a view! It was quite spectacular! Archie was a very friendly and accomodating manager who was very welcoming. However it was often difficult to find staff on the reception desk. The staff we encountered were friendly and helpful however there didn't seem to be the number of staff needed for the size of the hotel. The view from the bar and dining room was wonderful, however, this was out of bounds during our visit as there was a mining conference being conducted. We stayed three days in the hotel and we only able to use this room once during that time. This was very disappointing. We dined outside of the hotel on two of the three nights during our stay. The food in the hotel was very disappointing. I had a facial and massage with Alisa at the hotel and it was excellent, the best I have had in many years. Alisa is an amazing beautician and is passionate about her job. I would recommend her services highly.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the higher floors overlooking the lake as this is the best aspect of the hotel.

Awesome views and old world charm. We had interconnecting rooms and what SPACE and utterly comfortable. Beautiful renovation on the spa but a pity house guests are asked to pay to use the pool. Breakfast was nice but could be a little more relaxed. Staff are a great asset to the place as always attentive, helpful and pleasant. Cinema was great. Location is out of the way if you want to actually be in Queenstown but we wanted to be near Arrowtown and Coronet Peak so it worked for us. Did not try the restaurant for dinner so can't comment.

Room Tip: Obviously rooms overlooking the Shotover River are the ones to have.

We had booked the hotel well in advance. However, when we arrived it looked as if there were not ready at all. There were no towels, disposable shower gel was half-used with someone's hair stuck on the bottle. The TV did not work (antenna cable missing). I asked the receptionist to fix it just to never hear from her again. TV stand was broken and was dangerously leaning towards the window.

Room Tip: Look for something else.
