The Black Sheep Backpackers
Reviewed 26 May 2014

After having stayed in a couple of other hostels over the past few weeks in Queenstown Black Sheep was very refreshing. I honestly cannot praise this place enough!

Myself and my boyfriend stayed here for a week in a mixed dorm. The staff are so polite and helpful. We were given a warm welcome and everything was explained to us thoroughly.

The communal lounge area is warm and comfortable with heaps of bean bags, sofas and a log burner that you can be in control of if you end up getting a bit chilly. They even have a Sunday night film night where they play a feature film at 9pm.

The whole hostel is kept clean and tidy. The bathrooms are super clean and even have a hair dryers in. The hair dryer stopped working but they fixed the issue straight away. They do their best to keep the kitchen clean - although they do shut the kitchen at about 1.30-2pm to clean which is a little awkward with it being lunch time.

Check in time is later than most (3pm) but you can still leave your luggage in their FREE luggage storage and use their kitchen, lounge and bathrooms - extremely handy if you're moving from hostel to hostel.

There are so many little things that make this hostel so customer friendly - free, fast and unlimited wifi, free bicycle rental, a massive DVD/VHS collection, great location (literally a walk through the gardens to get to town) and free disc rental for frisbee golf. They have all the little touches down to the very last thing. This is the best review I have given a hostel since moving around Queenstown. I would absolutely recommend The Black Sheep to anyone - and with having a weekly rate of $160 a week it's the totally worth it.

Thanks Guys!

Great service and amenities (wifi actually works) and helpful friendly staff. We arrived early and needed to organise ourselves for work our room wasn't ready but we were allowed to use it and the showers which was great. We enjoyed a hot spa which was perfect for a winters day! Clean and tidy good bedding also. Would definitely stay again :)

We were staying at the black sheep for 3 nights and had to leave our car on the road. Due to the themperature it wouldn't start again. So the very friendly brazilian caretaker didn't wait a second and helped us start our car. Also very good Location, right next to the gardens and the queenstown Discgolf course (discs were available for free), clean facilities and rooms. Absolutely recommended.

We stayed here for 5 nights in a double room!

Pros: good location (5 mins walk to city centre), clean rooms, tv in the room, free wifi, friendly staff (helpful for booking activities), quiet at night.

Cons: there are no private bathrooms and you have to walk outside through the public area to have a shower, no doors (only shower curtains) in the shower, not enough hooks or benches to hang your things in the shower, the kitchen is small, crowded and was the dirtiest I have seen out of 4 weeks in NZ, no sharp knives to use in the kitchen, the housekeeper left our door unlocked while we went out one day (not a huge deal, but could have been).

Overall, the kitchen and bathrooms were a bit of an issue. I probably wouldn't recommend this place to a friend.

We spent 3 nights in a double room with shared toilet/shower. The staff was quite helpful and friendly. They stored part of our luggage for 5 days and gave us great tips about the town. The free bike hire was also a plus. Everything was pretty clean. We would definitely stay there again.

I had to wait for 20 mins for check -in and the staff was telling us " you just need to wait " . Not professional at all.. very bad front counter customer service. Poor sound system kept us awake through all night when someone flushed a toilet..
