“Location is great, its cheap what more do you want.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 March 2012

Great location for the hostel and its cheap. We generally stay at backpackers if we are doing big trips as the money saved on beds is money we can spend on staying away longer. As with all backpackers you cant expect much.
However this place did surprise as the rooms get a fridge and tea and coffee facility's, we also got a free breakfast.
There is a bar attached to the hostel which like most backpackers can get very noisy and a lot of people hanging about outside. As always there are cheap drinks and vouchers that can make for a cheap start to a night out.
The free breakfast unfortunately is crap. Its toast and cereal but in a group of 4 with only about 6 other diners we had to share plates and cutlery. Heaps of people waiting just because of the lack of utensils. The milk and juice were both off as well.
Our toilet also did not work and ran water all night, and there was a little mould in the corners of the bathroom, and the doors to the rooms all seem to slam shut. Sort of things you expect in a backpackers though.

Room Tip: Dont get a room next to the bright Base sign out the front, its super bright all night. The rooms ab...

Stayed here with 3 friends (2 guys, 1 girl) in April 2011 for 3 nights. Right in the central hub of Queenstown so this place is ideal in terms of location. Fergburger is across the road for the midnight munchies.
Groundfloor is reception with access to computers/internet and the pub/club next door. They do have Wifi as well. Service was ok but be prepared to wait a long time and cue as there is only 1-2 persons at the desk to help. You can also book all tours/trips/shotover/bungee excursions here through the service desk. Plenty of info available.
Stayed on the 3rd floor in 3 bedded room facing the street. Ensuite with bathroom/toilet was clean.
There is a laundry and communal kitchen if you bring food. Otherwise breakfast is served at the pub next door for a small fee - cereal/toast basically.
I would recommend this place to any backpacker/partygoer who does not want to sleep during their time in Queenstown. Not for the couple looking for a romantic holiday.
NB: Bring earplugs if you want to sleep at night.

Nice hostel in the perfect location in town, recommend for young travellers who like to go out drinking late. The bar/club downstairs will most likely disrupt your sleep if you're on that side of the building but the room being so nice made up for it and I go used to the thumping bass after one night. In our private twin room we had a tv and fridge and lots of space, comfy beds, one of the better rooms we've had on our trip. The staff downstairs are helpful, especially the girl who organises trips, very honest and extremely helpful in deciding what to do during your stay.

Here are some reasons NOT to stay at this hostel-
- You're looking for a quiet night
- You want luxury and don't mind the price
- You don't like people

If you're one of these people, don't stay here, as you won't enjoy it. However, if you want you're typical "backpacker" experience, complete with meeting people, drinking at the awesome (and extremely cheap) bar downstairs, and all you need is a clean room to do it from, then I highly recommend it.

On a side note, the travel agency run through base is very good downstairs. We used them, and they booked everything with no problems. They do employ backpackers, so quality of staff may vary a bit on this point.

We had a queen private room

Pros:
- Fast and easy check-in
- Amazing location, right in the centre of town, walking distance to the waterfront and Fergburger
Free breakfast (toast, cereal, juice, coffee)
- View of mountains

CONS:
- Bed was very lumpy and uncomfortable, worst sleep in weeks
- No electrical outlets in or near the bathroom
- Never any hot water in the shower
- No hair dryer in room
- Not enough lighting in the room
- No bars or hooks to hang towels/toiletry bags in bathroom
- Very noisy - people yelling down the halls at all hours!

SUMMARY
It was probably OK value based on the location, but if you're looking for something comfortable and a decent night's sleep, we recommend staying somewhere else and walking a few blocks.

Stayed here as part of my stray tour with friends.

Recpetion staff were ok, but the lift was broken when we first arrive and stray traveller stay on the top floor *thumbs down* but it was eventually fixed before we left.
The room was a 6 bed dorm, relatively clean, with an ensuite shower and WC. There is a full length mirror on the wall which is a luxury! There is also a fridge and kettle.

The shower is a rubbish push button thin like you get on sinks and takes AGES to warm up :(

You can do laundry for $4 (2x$2 coins) wash and dry are the same cost; theres also GHD's for $4 to use. I couldn't find an iron which was a bit rubbish!
