You can't beat the location and this is why we chose to stay at the Sofitel. its across the road from the ski centre and when you come back from day skiing tied and wet its great to be able to walk across the street and be in a hot bath within 5 minutes of getting off the bus. And they do have great baths, nice and big, with spa, and a t.v. to watch. Was very nice and relaxing.

They have a lovely spa and they provide complimentary steam room services to guests (you need to book). The room was spacious and pleasant. Everyone was very friendly and we were made to feel very welcome.

The concierge service was excellent, Seamus in particular is worth noting.

Unfortunately reception not so good. When we arrived we were told that our rooms were pre-paid (I honestly had no idea) and then when we went to check out we were told that they weren't pre-paid. I don't mind paying my bill but this was annoying. We were also told that breakfast was not included but when I came home and checked my records I discovered that breakfast was included in our rate. While the hotel reimbursed this cost to us, we had only eaten in the restaurant twice as we chose to eat out because the cost "was not included". We were also not advised until the last time we ate in the restaurant that our son could eat for free, again it would have been nice to know this in advance. An otherwise really good hotel experience tarnished by poor service.

But the quality of the boxes the hotel did check ensured the top rating:
The quality of the hotel was impressive. My experience to date of NZ hotels was par to below. This was a world rated stay so unlike anything yet experienced in the country.
Check in was very personal and all very professional. The French greeting I suppose is part of the Sofitel brand but did seem out of place in South Island. We arrived too early to move into the rooms but once we returned to the hotel our bags were in the rooms.
The room itself is the fundamental quality. Two spacious cupboards, lighted on opening, shoe horn, clothes brush and linen washing bags. Two luxurious dressing gowns (even fitted my girth). No dumb valet though.
A well -appointed work station with an overhead light and plugs near the table to plug in my laptop and to charge all the other devices that we take for granted these days. Free Wi-Fi on 4 devices up to 500mb/ day.
There was a Minibar with well stocked teas and coffees and coffee machine. We did not use the minibar stock or the coffee machine. The big kettle was also a plus.
TV had Sky with more channels than we could really consider watching but at least we could easily find something for the back drop of our stay.
The rooms and area were a little noisy in the passages and the loud banging of the neighbours on occasion.
The two double beds were very comfortable and there were extra blankets if you don’t want to be too toasty when you retire. Turn down service was provided for a welcome return to the room after an exhausting day in NZ’s adventure capital. The bed lighting was a big box not checked. Poor lighting that was not reader friendly – a must for any hotel of this quality.
The bathroom was a treat – large with plenty of large towels (not as fluffy as the Radisson experienced recently), a big bath with jet streams and separate shower, lighted shaving mirror and plenty of space to unpack toiletries etc. The shampoo was a good quality – my wife and daughter used it and they are fussy. There was also a TV in the bath for those who wanted to soak and be entertained – multi tasking??
The staff was very obliging and efficient. We asked for additional cups and coffee etc. – these were delivered in a flash and we never felt that our request was too much trouble.
We did not sample the cuisine as the delights of Queenstown offered too much competition to dining in.

Room Tip: We stayed on the 5th floor away from the elevators - was good for us.

Awesome hotel in the heart of Queenstown. Close to everything. Room was absolutely beautiful. Loved the television over the bathtub. Concierge service was the best. Don't miss the Italian restaurant in front of the hotel to the right...absolutely amazing Italian food.

Room Tip: Eat at the Italian restaurant across the street to the right.

Very convenient location within walking distance to restaurants and waterfront. The staff were helpful, polite and friendly, especially the young wait staff at breakfast and the executive lounge.
We had an issue with the heating in our room and were helped immediately with a portable heater.

Be wary of the $700 deposit you have to leave ie: $100 a day for each day of your stay, i stayed 7 days from July 19th - July 26th, hence the $700 deposit, it was $2000 for the room for the week, but it is in ski season, it may be cheaper in summer.

Other than the deposit the hotel is amazing, it is directly across the road from the ski centre and the busses up to the ski fields, and right near the town and shops and restaurants.
The hotel room was sheer bliss, we had welcome chocolates on arrival and a note from the sofitel staff welcoming us. The room had a huge king sized bed, flat screen tv, sitting area, coffee cappacino maker, complimentary bottled water, 2 free drinks in the bar. The spa bath
(i chose a spa room and it didn't dissapoint) the huge 2 person spa was luxurious and you had a television on the wall to watch tv while you soaked your bones after a great day on the snow. The bed was turned down every evining and if you didn't want this service you could flick the do not disturb switch and they wouldn't come in the room.
When we arrived we had the bellman store our skis for us and take us to our room, explaining everything in detail of how to work the telvision to the two types of shower heads in the separate shower and how to operate them. He also showed us where the mini bar was and how to work the coffee machine, how to use the tv controls, where the safe was and the robes and slippers. Explained how the free wifi worked and how to access it, you could use it in all parts of the hotel. We were also offered 3 types of complimentary newspapers and they are on your door in a sofitel bag every morning. The bathroom amenites were your usual soap, bodywash, shampoo, conditioner, but you also had ear cleaners, emory boards, make up pads, sewing kit as extras.
There is a phone in the bathroom if you wanted to talk to someone whilst in the spa, the spa tv had 8 local channels, but the main tv in the room had all the sattelite channels and you had a tv guide in the room as well.
Everyone was so polite, even the cleaning staff when you saw them in the halls, it was very helpful when we had come back from skiing to have someone there to put your skis in the ski room and hang your boots and gear for you, and they were right there the next day to get them for you when you needed them.
I can't comment on the restaurant as i didn't have any meals, the breakfast was a full buffet for $39.95 and i did contemplate having dinner which started from about $25 up, but there are so many places to eat in queenstown, we never got around to eating in the hotel.
If you are a first time visitor to queenstown, you have to try a fergburger, there is a line up most of the time but they are well worth the wait and also try The Cow, it is a lovely stone building, a little tricky to find but it has the best pizza and pasta.
Got off the track there a bit, back to the hotel, i would definitley recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to stay in luxury and be treated very well sofitel queenstown is just that.

Room Tip: My only tip is choose a spa room if you can afford it, it is pure bliss

My boyfriend and I recently stayed at the Sofitel in Queenstown for five nights as part of a larger bridal party group. I cannot express how the staff of the Sofitel went above and beyond, exceeding all expectations of superior customer service. We were always greeted with a friendly “bonjour” and the staff was always courteous and professional – even in the small hours of the night.

Darren, the Sofitel wedding co-ordinator, must be singled out and thanked for a job well done, going above and beyond what his job description entails. I can only comment on what I saw but I am sure he was in the background pulling all the strings like a master puppeteer to make sure that he and his team made our friends’ special day go so smoothly. I was most impressed that he was available for the duration of reception organising staff late in to the evening and on duty once again some seven hours later to organise a special treat for my friends. Darren and his team are a credit to your hotel and a valuable asset.

Excellent location, conveniently located across the road from the Ski Centre and one street back from Fergburger.

We look forward to returning sometime in the future and our only regret is that we forgot to sign up to the Accor Club (or equivalent) at the time of check-in :(
