“Far out!”
Reviewed 22 September 2009

This is one of the best places I've stayed in my life. We had a two bedroom apartment overlooking the lake which was beautifully appointed and the view was simply amazing.

Spotless, quiet, and very modern. It's a little out of town, but walkable and well worth the distance for the view you get (depending on your room of course).

If it just had bath robes and a hot tub on the deck I would never have left.

We stayed in a standard 2 bedroom courtyard apatment. Room was clean and modern with an absolutely fantastic shower (which is definately what you want at the end of a long day skiing) and a great view. Walk into town is a good brisk 20 minute walk. The other alternative is to catch the connect-a- bus ( bus stop is pretty much at the top of the drive way to Oak Shores) which comes by every 30 minutes ( 5 minute bus trip ). Ticket is $4.00 each way, $10.00 a daily ticket or $35 for a 5 day ticket. I kinda liked being out of the hustle and bustle of Queenstown city centre, but not for everyone. Downfalls of this place is the bar and restaurant are not running and we could not find any restaurants besides pizza that would deliver. So if you get back after skiing and your exhausted, unless your organised and have dinner/drinks sorted, you have to go into town which is a pain. Walls are pretty thin. We could here the people in the unit above us. Other points are you had to pay for the internet ( which is one computer in the reception area and you have to buy a $5.00 credit ) and the laundry is not so much a laundry than two dryers and washing machines in a cupboard in the carpark. I would stay at the Oak Shores again. If you want clean, comfortable and modern accommodation then the Oaks will be perfect.

We had been recommend The Oaks by some close friends so we had high expectations on our three night stay. Check in was painless and swift, and we made our way to our studio styled hotel room. The place doesn't wind any design awards as it feels like a rabbit hole, it really has the feel of a place sold of the plans to a unsuspecting public - 'look at the views' would have been the sales pitch I imagine.

Our room was of a good size and everything was clean and in it's place. Then the fun started - noise! Paper thin walls and a connecting door made for a very disturbed sleep, and add to this every room on our floor had a doorbell that was so loud that it awoke us each time our noisy neighbors used it (why the hotel needed doorbells is beyond me).

Two other events prevented a good nights sleep, one being the lack of thermostat on the heating, the room is so hot it's unbearable to sleep - so while it was still winter outside we had to leave the balcony door ajar to cool the room and then we still slept on top of the sheets. Secondly was the incredible uncomfortable bed, both of us woke each morning complaining of lower back ache.

Watch out if you book through wotif.com as w selected 'un-serviced' which meant no change of towels - which isn't so bad but there isn't a towel heater. But kiwi ingenuity was at work - lay them on the carpet as the heat thrown off dries the wet towels.

We stayed in the Deluxe three bedroom apartment for 7 nights. The room was not the problem it was really nice fireplace, kitchen, laundry, nice bathrooms etc.

However we had a few major issues with the service.

We had seven people on the trip, 3 couples and a single. The room had three bedrooms each with a double bed and a bathroom. Whether it was an oversight on the hotels part or a break down in communication on our part there was no bed for the single person.

When we asked for a pull out bed (we were willing to pay) we were flatly refused and told that there were none left. Fair enough maybe.

When we asked for some BLANKETS for that person to use on the couch we were REFUSED. Unbelievable. Every hotel I've ever been to will give you extra blankets even if they are not for another person. Most will even have spare blankets already in the room.

After three nights sleeping on the couch with whatever spare we could give him we returned back to the room after being out for the day to find a trundle bed set up, followed shortly by a phone call from reception to make sure the bed had been set up and to advise us that of course there would be a charge for the bed at $30/night. Even after explaining how we had not had a bed for 3 nights and trying to negotiate even a discount we were flatly refused. I find this unacceptable considering that the room was over $3,000 for the week in the first place.

Also either the first or second night we had no towels and when we called reception they finally agreed to let us have some towels...but we had to come to reception to get them ourselves, which wasn't a short walk from our apartment.

My particular room I shared with my husband was only made up 2 out of the seven nights. One I will let them have because we were home and told them not to worry about cleaning.

Also strangely enough there was a room and signs saying that there was a restaurant but it wasn't open.

I find the situation with the blankets, towels and bed totally unacceptable.

My wife and I stayed at Oaks Shores for 7 nights and we were extremely disappointed. We booked a hotel room and soon discovered that the room we had booked was actually part of a larger apartment, separated only by a wooden door. Needless to say we could hear everything from the other room.

The room itself was very basic but clean. A fridge was provided but it was so noisy at night we usually unplugged it. The bathroom was good with an excellent shower, needed after a day on the slopes. There was no restaurant or bar and internet access was expensive.

From what we saw the large apartments were well appointed and comfortable. If booking this hotel, only book the large three bed apartments but be prepared for sleepless nights.

In general the hotel is in bad need of a painter. Every wall in the hotel is damaged or scuffed. The staff were mixed, with some members helpful and others very rude. Particularly the cleaning staff who were at times offensive.

Queenstown is an amazing place but Oaks Shores does not do it justice. There are many many other places to stay of much better quality. If we were to return we would stay at Pounamu Apartments, they looked amazing.

Stayed here with my partner for one night after spending 2 nights at The Rees. Very disappointed with the hotel. Waited 15 mins to be checked in. The room was really small and we could hear the guests in the room next door, quite clearly! Hotel finishings needs a bit of a revamp. Stay at The Rees rather!

We stayed at the Oak Shores Apartments for 1 week and was truly gutted to leave. We occupied a two bedroom deluxe apartment on the 8th floor looking straight onto the Lake and the Remarkables Mountains.

Our apartment consisted of a top quality kitchen with new / modern appliances. The living room had great views onto the lake with two big sofas and a great LCD TV on the wall with surround sound + DVD player

Also in the Living room was a fire which kept the whole room nice and warm.

The dining room and balcony was also equiped with modern furniture.

both bedrooms were en-suite with massive King Size beds in each one. The larger bedroom had a LCD tv on the wall and a bath, the smaller one just had a shower.

both bathrooms had under-floor heating which was nice on those cold mornings.

the staff were very friendly and were willing to help all the time.

This is by the best accommodation I've stayed in and i'll be booking again for next ski season.
