“Acceptable but average”
Reviewed 23 April 2014

Stayed here 4 nights over Easter with family. Location excellent but a very poorly designed hotel. Poor views from floors 6 and 7, terrible breakfast (in a windowless room in a hotel right on the lake….strangest choice for a dining room ever). Service acceptable but took us for idiots(asked about coffee each morning as were told the machine had "just" broken down and would be fixed soon(same story 4 days running). Also poor wifi and despite most places in Queenstown offering free wifi(inc. backpackers accommodations) here they charge through the nose for it. For some reason Peppers advertise themselves as 4-5 star but well way from that. Is just a hotel but for the price can do a lot lot better in Queenstown

Room Tip: Avoid 6th and 7th floor and better off buying a sim card and hotspotting phone as a modem…better con...

Hello John 1966 1966

Thank you for posting a review on Trip Advisor. We value you feedback today and like to review all reviews internally.

I noted that you queried our property star rating. Just so you are aware, Qualmark (the official rating system organisation in New Zealand) have awarded the property a 5 star serviced apartment grade. The criteria does differ a little compared to a 5 star 'Hotel' but we do clearly meet the threshold for this status.

I am glad to see that you found the location perfect for your holiday needs. All of our rooms on level 6 are advertised as Garden View Suites without a view of the lake. Suites on the 7th floor have amazing views of our Gardens, mountains, the Remarkables and can see the lake.

Regarding breakfast, our current packages include a complimentary breakfast and you are welcome to request a gourmet takeaway breakfast box delivered to your room if it does not suit to dine in our breakfast room. You will be glad to know that our coffee machine has now been repaired and unfortunately couldn't have gone down at a more inconvenient time, over Easter when our service agent was on leave. I am very sorry about that and I completely understand how important coffee is to get ones day off to a good start!

I hope you had a great trip for the remainder of your time in New Zealand and thank you once again.

Kind regards,

We stayed here for 4 nights over Easter. We come to Queenstown at least once a year, this was our first time at Peppers. We most certainly would NOT come back here.

The Room:- We had a studio apartment - wouldn't recommend that unless you were overnighting then it would be ok. There was very little hanging space in the wardrobe which when you are staying for 4 nights is pretty useless. We only had a small view of the lake with the most tiniest balcony, no chairs to sit on but you can stand there!! duh!! It had an interconnecting door to another apartment which was occupied and clearly had a kitchen because we got to enjoy their cooking smells - NO they weren't pleasant! The room ended up smelling of stale cooking smells the entire time we have been here.

The Bathroom - very small you couldn't have swung a cat in there!

Location: Is good, close walk to town and good views of the lake.

Servicing of the room:- The towels are small but were changed each day if so requested as was the shampoo, liquid soap etc. The scary thing was watching them service our room. They serviced it within about 5 mins - the used cups were RINSED out in the sink and dried with a flannel ( a clean one was used because there were no dirty ones available( they had been removed) but the cleaner did look for a used towel in the bathroom but had to go and fetch a clean one!!). The toilet wasn't cleaned nor was the hand basin which in other hotels/apartments would normally have been attended to. Hygiene I believe is an issue.

Breakfast- hmmmm, completely disorganised, most mornings regardless of what time we arrived , they had run out something; butter, bread, hot food, etc, each day there was always something. AND as for the jars of jam ........ reused jars of something with jams in with NO labels so until you put that spread on your toast you didn't know what you were eating, really come on you are meant to be a 4 or 5 star hotel, this is more like a 2 star!!!!!

Front desk:- All the staff have been pleasant don't get me wrong but yet again I had the feeling that the left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing. Maybe it was a lack of experience or training??? Yes the service staff in Queenstown are transient but this should not be the guests problem.

The internet:- Not user friendly. difficult to connect to - most of the time and expensive!!!!

I personally can not recommend these apartments, unless you can not find anywhere else to stay in Queenstown. This would be the worst accommodation we have experienced in Queenstown at this level.

Dear fieldadvisor

We welcome your feedback and it was good to see that you found the property ideally located for your needs and enjoyed the view.

Our Studios are perfect for shorter stays and I would definately recommend any one of our 5 other larger room types if you need more space or luxury.

Your comments regarding the days housekeeping and breakfast experience have been noted and followed up, thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Have a great weekend!

Our 3rd trip to Queenstown and we stayed at Peppers, July 2013 with 2 adults and 2 small children. We were in a 2brm apartment with lake views on level 5 ( which also backs onto the centre courtyard). The apartment was huge and views were to die for. Great location for kids as it was a flat 3-5 minute (max) walk into town. It wasn't cheap, but it will be hard to find something as good next time.
I'd suggest not including breakfast in your package if you are staying in one of the apartments as the apartments have full kitchens and amazing views from your breakfast table, while the hotel breakfast room is at the top back of the hotel with no windows or views!! I felt very relived we hadn't included breakfast when I saw that.

We were lucky enough to spend a few days playing golf in Queenstown last week and stayed in a private unit (406) at the Beacon! A deck spa, Queenstown a 3 minute walk down the road and views that will make you not want to leave! This place has everything you need for a great stay with a huge entertaining deck including very clean spa, 180 degree views of the lake and mountains, Bedrooms each with and en suite and full kitchen! The apartment welcomes you immediately upon entry and the lounges and decor are comfortable after a hard day of loosing balls into the scrub! The location and the views make this place a great place to stay. We had 5 sharing this apartment so cost was very affordable in March! Not sure in Winter but this place is cool during summer/autumn. Enjoy

We stayed for 6 nights and had rooms on the 3rd and 4th floor facing the lake(just to confuse you be aware that the 4 th floor is the 5th floor in the second set of lifts).
The view was magnificent and the location in relation to the town centre was good(a ten minute casual walk).
We stayed in two 2x2 rooms with great balconies and lounge kitchen area but beware the couple who has to stay in the second bedroom which is dark(in one case no window and the other opened to the common area so basically had to keep the curtains closed all the time) and smaller than the main bedrooms which had views out to the lake.
The breakfast was basic continental and the hot was $10pppd extra. Unfortunately the eggs were usually cold and the breakfast room also had no window so was very dungeon like. The hot selection appeared to run out regularly. The staff were friendly but disorganised.
While we were there they were renovating the outside of the upper rooms which you access by a separate lift so there was a lot of scaffolding again not very aesthetically pleasing.
Overall as we bagged the front (good) room an average rating. I think the couple who had to take the second room might have rated their experience differently.

My husband and I stayed here for 6 nights and we had a wonderful time. We had a Garden View room and we were really happy with the position.
The room itself had 2 bedrooms, quite a reasonable bathroom and a kitchenette which was well stocked with a little dishwasher that made things very easy.
Everything was nice and clean and was serviced every day, so nice to come home to after a hard day sightseeing.
The staff were very nice and friendly, we booked a couple of tours with them and everything went smoothly.
When we booked, breakfast was included, this is a continental breakfast only. If you want hot food the cost is an extra $10 per person. That was not mentioned.
This is our only complaint and it is not really important, but it should be made plain at time of booking.
Our recommendation.......stay here ITS GREAT!

Booked through nz entertainment guide so got a reasonably cheap deal for a hotel room with partial lake views. Can't complain with the description.
The Good.... Location was great. Right on lake front and a short (5min) flat stroll into the town centre. Keep in mind that it is a busy road so can be a little loud from trucks and cars passing in the morning. Car park was easy to find and right off the main road (there is another one at the back somewhere for the rooms in the other building)

The Bad... Has a gym (which is nothing more than a hotel sized room with a treadmill, cycle and 1 piece of equipment). No pool but there is a spa somewhere, no idea where though. Didn't get a tour or explained where anything was.

The Ugly... Room (307) was EXTREMELY tiny and had internal access to another room which was occupied throughout our stay. No draws, but had a small cupboard to hang clothes. The walls are paper thin so you can hear EVERYTHING from conversations in the adjoining room, to people coming out of the lifts 30-40 metres down the hallway. The neighbouring room (308) were watching TV late one night and it sounded like our TV was on it was that clear!!
Room was advertised as having a king sized bed. Extremely disappointed to find 2 old single beds pushed together with 2 single duvet covers. Joined only by a king sized sheet. Not what I was expecting from a 5 star luxury hotel.
Bathroom had a shower and toilet but no extractor fan to remove moisture from the shower or smells from the toilet) - shower had a sign saying to keep the door closed so the steam doesn't set the fire alarm off. Maybe an idea to get the fan that looks like it is there working??? The wooden vanity that the sink sat in was falling to bits (bubbling and flaking from water damage).
The room was next to the neighbouring Rydges hotel which had some outside lights for their stairwell that lit up our room. The first night the light beam was right across our faces in bed. Second night placed some glasses up against the blind it to stop that.

Room Tip: Wouldn't bother with a hotel room if you plan on staying here... Unless you get a dirt cheap pri...
