The Waitiri Creek tasting room is actually a former chapel, so a very quaint building and set up. The owners are on hand at the tasting room, and also actively involved in the kitchen and restaurant onsite too. They (she) was very entertaining and really gave us a lot of insight into the local wine region (in an interesting way).

We were just there for the tastings (NZ$7 per person, 6 wines). The pinot noir is fabulous - especially the 2007 vintage. I was also a big fan of their chardonnay.

Here's another little gem of a winery. Situated in an old church, tucked along the Gibbston Valley, this winery produces excellent pinots for not over-the-top prices.

We were in search for a vineyard lunch when we stumbled upon Waitiri Creek. It ended up being our favorite lunch during our entire stay in New Zealand. The hand-made pizzas are wonderful, which we paired with the winery's own dry Riesling. The staff was very friendly, and made some helpful suggestions for shopping and tramping in the area. We finished our visit with short pinot tasting, which is conducted in an old converted churchhouse. Truly a beautiful setting.
