“Cosy and convivial”

Bunkers was one of the reasons my stay on Stewart Island was brilliant. It's like the island itself - small, cosy, and everyone sees one another at some point in the lounge/kitchen. For some reason people just don't hang out in the rooms - I guess the warmth of the fireplace helps!

Kaka are frequent visitors before sunset, and they can be cheeky. When I was there Alex and Danilo ran the place, and it's impossible to fault them for their work in keeping the place warm and clean and organising activities and dinners.

Sleep couldn't be more peaceful and comfortable, but if you get cold easily as I do, there are 2 or 3 hot water bottles lying around in the kitchen.

I was pleasantly surprised by the Bunkers Backpackers. It is a small hostel, but it has clean and comfortable rooms and a very cosy common room. The kitchen is small, but well-equipped and adequate for the size of the hostel.
I stayed in a dorm room downstairs which had a bunk bed and two proper beds. It was very comfortable and clean. The lounge has a big, comfy couch and a wood fire. There are two toilets and showers, all of them located downstairs in separate rooms, so that you can still access all of the others if one is occupied. It took quite a bit of time for the water in the shower to turn hot, though.

Alex and Danilo, the people who take care of the hostel, were both very nice and friendly, and very helpful with any questions I had. The owners of the place come by occasionally, and although I did not meet them, I heard they were really nice. We even got a free crayfish that Alex and Danilo shared with us.

The hostel is located in an easy walking distance from the ferry terminal, the convenience store and several restaurants, but you can also easily access interesting walks, viewing points and bays from there as well as the ferry to Ulva Island. If Stewart Island had a centre, Bunkers Backpackers would be centrally located.

Altogether, my time in the Bunkers Backpackers was very comfortable and pleasant, and I would especially like to thank both Alex and Danilo for their friendly welcome and hospitality!

I stayed two nights at Bunkers with my son & daughter. I shared a twin room upstairs with my young son and my teen daughter shared a bunk room downstairs with several other lovely ladies.
My room was a small, gabled, and very cute with comfy warm beds. There are three other double rooms up the very steep stairs but it is very quiet.
The dorm rooms are downstairs and are of adequate size.
There are two showers and two toilets, plus two hand basins, all separate so never had to wait in line. Large entrance wet area to leave boots etc.
Cosy living area with wood fire. Kitchen had all we needed. Nice big table and comfy lounge space to hang out and chill in.
Alex & Danilo were very friendly and helpful, working for owners who pop in occasionally.
I had checked out all other accommodation on internet before coming but without knowing the geography of the land it was hard to book wisely, so I was very pleased to arrive and discover we were in the close to all the facilities on the flat part of town, whereas so many other options were in the surrounding hills and bays.
Bunkers is an easy walk from everything.
Loved staying there and would be happy to return next time.
Yes! I will be back :-)

We stayed in a double room, upstairs. Small, but functional. Toilets and showers all downstairs (but separate, so no toilet line in the morning waiting for long showers to end). Pleasant lounge, with reasonably varied (and quirky) library. Kitchen and dining area a bit small. Outdoor tables in back, sometimes visited by interesting birds. Friday night bring-your-own barbecue.

The building is a large old house, in reasonable but not great repair. The people managing it, Alex and (especially) Danilo were pleasant and helpful.

The accommodation on Stewart Island is either in the fairly compact town or scattered all about the outskirts. This place is in the town, an easy walk from the store, DOC visitor center, ferry dock, and Stewart Island Airlines depot - but very quiet (not that there's much noise on Stewart Island anyhow).

Stayed on stewart island for 3 nights. Did the rakiura track and before and after i stayed here for one night and then was addicted so stayed one more night.

if people are expecting luxury then simply do not go to stewart island. This is a rugged, beautiful place and the accommodation here fits the profile of the island. This hostel was warm, staff were friendly, we stayed in one rainy day and listened to a fellow traveller playing guitar, watched a day long tv marathon and had a communal dinner. Everything you would want as a traveller who likes to meet people outside of the typical party seen. The facilities are, kitchen is a little small considering the size of the hostel but all in all a great place and felt more like a home than a hostel.

Room Tip: Stayed in a dorm which was spacious and comfortable.

Bunkers was friendly, quiet and in a great location. The double room we shared was quite good although we didn't think the bedding had been washed very thoroughly. In fact, the cleanliness was the major problem with Bunkers. The bathrooms, kitchen and general areas could have done with a really good clean. Also outside was very untidy. The bathroom/shower areas need a real renovation. There's a "shower cupboard" and a "toilet cupboard" off the kitchen storage area with a sink in between. On the other wall are fridges and freezers and laundry equipment. The other bathroom was tiny and not very clean (shower was plugged up due to hair deposits). Also, more than 2 people struggle to do anything in the kitchen at the same time. Kitchen equipment is disorganized and not that clean. Lots of dirty dishes hanging around.
It probably survives because there are very few good accommodation options on Stewart Island and it is in an excellent location. Also, the staff were very friendly and helpful.

We stayed in a double room. The room itself is okay, pretty small but clean. Although the house has been renovated and opened just a few years ago no heating has been installed. With the average temperatures on Stewart Island and the old fashioned windows with no good isolation you definitely need a hot water bottle to stay warm, even in summer. The fireplace in the community area doesn't warm very well either. Kitchen size as well as the seating opportunities aren't enough for the number of guests. But for us, the bathrooms were the worst. Of course you are surrounded by nature which makes you come across spiders but the amount there was just too much. Around the entrance there were spiders everywhere as well as spider webs right above the shower (a big black hole or flue instead of a ventilation system). There were only 2 toilets for all guests and they were very small. Also the bathrooms are not kept very clean, but this may vary depending on the working holiday traveller that is responsible for the hostel during your stay. But Stewart Island itself is definitely worth the trip!
