“Southern idyll”

Staying at ORL was the perfect end to our wonderful southern adventure - a place to sooth the most jaded of spirits. Annett and Phil impart such heartfelt affection for their home, manifested so deliciously in her cooking and so engagingly in Phil's sharing of the island's natural and human history.

Go out with Phil in the kayaks if you can!

My clients stayed here for two nights and were just brimming about the lodge and its hosts. Annett's food was exceptional, and the comfort of the lodge was very pleasant. It is a perfect base from which to explore the Island on foot and enjoy what Stewart Island has to offer.

I stayed at the lodge in november for a week. So much to see on the island apart from going to ulva island for the day. After walking for hours each day, it was wonderful to return to such a comfortable and warmly hosted setting. The lodge is ideally situated. Annnett and phil are awesome hosts, and because of their knowledge of the island, my stay was enhanced by their suggestions about walking tracks , I may not have found out for myself. If you get the opportunity to go kayaking with Phil, do it !I had the best breakfast of the year there, Annett is a talented cook The place is so peaceful, and beautifully appointed. I will be back !

We did not expect to find such a lovely and peaceful place and in retrospect we have given ourselves a late christmas present with this exceptionally nice stay in the lodge. Annett's dinners are awesome and so is Phil's charming kajak tour, which took us at arms length to seals, seabirds and other creatures, which you can otherwise just study from the far distance. We will also never forget the bird encounters we had directly in their garden. The two days, although full of activity, passed much too quickly. I hope we will have another chance to visit Annett and Phil in the not so distant future.

Observation Rock Lodge was a Xmas present from my husband!
From the moment we were greeted by Phil after our long (15 minute) flight we felt
at home! Then we met the lovely Annette who made us feel equally at home!
We hiked, we ate, we did the half day kayak with Phil. So peaceful and Phil is full of wonderful
stories!!
Annettes breakfasts and dinners were so delicious. Presentation was beautiful! The Penguin Apple Cake was out of this world!!
Lots of bird life, beautiful scenery and great hosts!
We will return!!

Room Tip: 2 bedrooms in the cottage, both lovely.Only one with ensuite. Another bedroom with ensuite is in th...

We stayed two nights and had a wonderful time. The view was great, the accomodation very comfortable and in a very central location, but at the same time, very private. We really enjoyed Annett's dinners and breakfasts - huge portions and excellent flavours. Her presentation is first class. We also did the half day kayak with Phil - a must do on Stewart Island. The gardens and friendly Kaka made this spot even more special.

Staying at Observation Rock Lodge was such a treat. I'd found ORL on Trip Advisor but the term Lodge doesn't really describe the style of accommodation - this is a luxury B&B with the option of gourmet evening meals. Annette and Phil could not make you feel more welcome to their home and their aim is to ensure you get the maximum enjoyment from your stay on Stewart Island from the moment Phil picks you up at the wharf.
We stayed at ORL for just two nights but left feeling like departing friends.
ORL is a ten minute walk from the port / shops / restaurants but it is totally secluded. The view from the house across the inlet is uninterrupted and no building or structure can be seen.
The house has been beautifully restored and the gardens are full of bird life - especially the Kakas which will feed from your hand.
We dined in both nights and can recommend Annett's cooking. The meals were superb and beautifully presented. Breakfast was equally amazing. Annett's porridge is the best!
There are great walks on the island and we spent a very enjoyable day on Ulva and
Phil gave us an informative tour of the road accessible areas of the island.
Annette and Phil clearly love Stewart Island and want you to share in their joy of living in this tranquil paradise.

Room Tip: Of the two beautiful rooms, one opens to the garden with a beautiful deck, the other has a more priv...
