John and Aloma were recommended to us via motorcycling friends and they certainly did not disappoint. They have a lovely home and could not be more friendly and helpful with lots of tips on visiting the local attractions and help with bookings. Way above the call of duty John drove me to Queenstown to pick up a replacement bike following a rental breakdown. Wonderful people and good breakfast too !

Aloma and John immediatly make you feel very welcome in their home. I stayed for one night with my parents; the rooms were immaculate with very comfortable beds and Aloma made a great continental breakfast.
What really marks out Avon House though is the way that Aloma and John really do go that little bit further than other places I have stayed.
John has a wealth of knowledge about the area having worked for the Department of Conservation and was happy to talk us through our forthcoming trip to Doubtful Sound. Aloma then saved the whole trip by driving after us for 20km after we managed to forget one of our bags for the trip - this is a mark of Aloma and John as hosts - they truly care and want to make sure you enjoy the fabulous area they live in.

Aloma & John are most gracious hosts and their home is an excellent base to explore the Milford & Doubtfull Sounds. My wife and I are from California and we were are traveling with our friends from Christchurch Each couple had very comfortable room (one with a double bed and one with twin beds), a well equiped shared bath, a wood fire in the living room and a generous breakfast. John is an expert on the natural history of the entire area and both he and Aloma beguiled us with stories about their interesting lives on the South Island. They also offered personalized advice about how to get the most out of our visit. We will certainly stay with them again when we return to this special region of New Zealand.

Thanks to Aloma & John for their very good hospitality. Makes us feel just like our 2nd home in such a faraway place. It was our honeymoon trip and the Te Anau experience was the most memorable thanks to Aloma & John. They did their very best to make us feel warm in winter, with their hot tea, cookies, fireplace, bed warmer, etc. They are the most sincere hosts we experienced for our trip through the rest of NZ. Would really recommend to anyone visiting Te Anau as Aloma & John can give you very good advice on the area; they can even help you plan out your whole NZ trip if you talk to them. Would definitely stay with them the next time I return to Te Anau!

Aloma and John made our stay in the Milford Sound area better than we could have imagined. They are both very welcoming and sincere people who open their home to visitors from around the world. They shared their knowledge of what to do, where to do it, and which points of interest would be most appealing to us. In addition to offers of tea every day and a nice breakfast, Aloma made reservations for us on the Mitre Peak boat tour the Milford Sound. She also took time to highlight all the essential stops on our way.

John was happy to share his experiences, including those with the filming of The Lord of the Rings. He is a wealth of information and enjoys chatting with folks. We learned more about New Zealand in these couple days than we did anywhere else.

The rooms are a part of their home and are cozy. Don't expect a hotel room, it's more like going home for a visit. The bathroom is shared which worked out just fine for us. I believe they rent out two of the three bedrooms maximum at one time.

Avon House is within walking distance of the town in a residential neighborhood of TeAnau. There are a number of restaurants, nearby hiking, and internet available in town.

Aloma and John were wonderful hosts, John worked for the National Park and was very interesting with his tales of how they were bringing back the native animals and trees. My husband is gluten intollerent and Aloma looked after him very well. We were able to sit with them in there lounge and whenever we walked in tea was served with home made biscuits. It is shared bathroom facilities but that was not a problem.

The Avon House in Te Anau is located in a very good area, close to the town centre and the lake. It has private parking and if you want you can walk to all restaurants and shops in the town. The House and the rooms are very comfortable and are decorated very lovely. The overall standard is absolutely very high. Aloma and John are the best hosts that you can imagine. We had a perfect stay in the B & B. The breakfast was also absolutely perfect with a lot of choices. We felt like at home. We will recommend the Avon House to everyone, who prefers high service and quality, lovely details in a room and a warm personal contact to the hosts. John has a very good Know How about the region and the nature. He provided us very helpful traveling advices. After we left the Avon House, John and Aloma invited us for tea/coffee for the next day, to tell them about our experiences at Milford Sound. Thanks again to Aloma and John for the very good hospitality, for the homemade cookies.
We hope that we can come back!
