Dusky Ridges - Te Anau farmstay Bed and Breakfast
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 31 May 2014

My husband and I stayed at Dusky Ridges for 2 nights and it was an incredible experience. The farm is perched on the top of a hill with amazing views and rolling greens all around. The guest cottage we were in was large and very comfortable. The kitchen was well appointed and cosy, the bedroom had a sky-window through which you can admire the starlit night sky. Win and Henrik were wonderful hosts. We especially appreciated the time that Win took to show us around the farm. We met and fed a number of friendly sheep, deer, goats etc. Win also explained to us the intricacies of sheep farming - it was truly an eye-opener for city folks like us! We had a great time at Dusky Ridges; it was not only a great base from which to visit Milford Sound, it was an experience in and of itself!

Thank you Win and Henriek for making our stay at Dusky Ridges the best during our three week holiday in New Zealand. We were welcomed with lovely and fresh homemade preserves, juices, and amazingly good chocolate brownies ( again made by Win) along with fruits. Win ensured we had enough bread for all the three days we were there - She baked them herself! This personal attention was very touching and made all the difference in making an already great place unbeatable. Both Win and Henriek took time off their busy farming schedule to take the kids around the farm, and show the animals and feed them. The kids just enjoyed it so much. Dusky ridges had every thing required to make the stay comfortable - great location overlooking the mountains and lake, well appointed accommodation ( amazing views of the stars at night through the sky window, lying on the bed), fully equipped kitchen, spotlessly clean bathroom , and most importantly the most wonderful hosts possible. Well I couldn't recommend this more. If staying in Te Anau look no further! No! Go to Te Anau to stay at dusky Ridges. You will never regret!

Room Tip: Spare one day just to be in the farm, especially if children are there. They will thoroughly enjoy i...

We stayed here late March for 3 nights with our 2 young girls and we all absolutely loved it. I took a lot of photos on our trip, which covered a lot of the South Island, and I think the ones from Dusky Ridges are the most beautiful. Win and Henrik are the most amazing hosts. They are so genuine, helpful, warm and accommodating but they are also not at all in your face.

The accommodation itself if just lovely. It has been furnished and decorated beautifully (Win has fantastic taste) and is very cosy and homely. The beds are VERY comfortable and there are so many lovely little touches like home made muffins, home made bread, fresh fruit, home made preserves etc all provided on top of the very generous breakfast provisions.

We ate out twice as the town is very close. Once we had a meal in town and another night got take away fish and chips and brought them back to the house. One night we cooked, which worked very well. Being Aussies we naturally made use of the BBQ there. :)

Win is very generous with her time and showed us around the farm, providing us feed for the animals whenever the children wanted to feed them etc. They are very relaxed about having strangers on their property and generally allow you to go exploring on your own with just some obvious tips on what to do/not to do given it is a working farm.

We wished we had stayed longer. We could easily have stayed there for a week, but we will most definitely be back! Make sure you book well ahead if you want to stay here as it is very popular - for very good reason.

Thank you so much Win & Henrik!

Although this is not a B&B, but a farmstay! What a wonderful memory we will have for the rest of your lives! Win and Henrik are the most accommodating host & hostess we have ever dealt with. They make certain that you want for nothing. Win makes the best homemade bread and makes sure your refrigerator is well stocked with breakfast items...mostly from their farm! The 2 story cottage style quarters are superbly furnished and cozy. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need to cook all of your meals...if you chose to. Close enough in town to go dining.
Win arranged your helicopter tour, which included being picked up in their side yard!!!
We also enjoyed hand feeding some of the sheep, alpaca, goats and deer that are the family pets.
Our stay seemed too brief even though we were here for four nights! We would definitely recommend this lovely place! If we ever make it back to New Zealand (which is a high probability), we will be sure to stay here again!!!

My wife Brenna and I wanted to do a farmstay while in New Zealand and I came across Dusky Ridges on the web. it was rather close to our trip and Win and Henrik went out of their way to accommodate our stay on rather short notice - thank you Win and Henrik!

we visited a number of gorgeous and well-known places on our 10 day trip to the south island in december of 2013: mt cook, doubful sound, wanaka, routeburn track, west coast, franz josef glacier - and still i would have to say that our stay at Dusky Ridges was probably the highlight of our trip. it is the experience that i find myself talking about most when i tell people about our trip to new zealand.

First of all, the setting of Dusky Ridges is truly spectacular. set on a grassy hilltop surrounded by rolling pastures and pretty much 360 degree views of the Te Anau region with the lake and mountains in the background. it is a pleasure to simply stand around outside and absorb the view.

Second, it was a real farmstay. Win generously spent nearly an hour walking us around the farm and we got to walk around inside the pasture with some hand raised sheep, lambs, elk deer, and llamas. then we got to walk around the farm on our own. just my wife and I walking along dirt roads and seeing different paddocks of animals, watching the herds, taking in the view - it was a really special day for us.

Third, Win and Henrik are really lovely people and could not have been more welcoming to us. they had us in for tea and we really got the chance to talk and get to know each other. This was really special for us to gain an insight into their lives as livestock farmers and as new zealanders, plus they are genuine, open and thoughful people that are a pleasure to spend time with. Win noticed that we didn't bring shoes or boots suitable for tromping around the fields and suggested we borrow some of their own shoes - that one gesture tells you about the kind of people that the owners of Dusky Ridge are. during our visit to Dusky Ridges we felt like we were staying with friends.

thank you Win and Henrik!
best, Mark and Brenna from San Francisco, California USA

My father and I stayed here for almost a week in early February, and it was by far the best part of our vacation in New Zealand. Te Anau was not originally on our plan, but if we had to do it again, we might spend less time in Queenstown and Franz Joseph, and more at Te Anau. There is really alot to do in the areas around Te Anau. We did a day drive to Milford Sound (way closer than Queenstown), a jetboat on the Wairaurahiri, jetboat fishing on the Waiau river, hiked Mt. Luxmore on the first part of the Kepler track (great, but looong day hike), took a fantastic helicopter ride over Dusky and Doubtful Sounds (the helicopted picked us up on the lawn of the B&B), glowworm caves one night, and enjoyed about a day walking around Te Anau.

A big part of this was because of our hosts, Win and Henrik. They were very careful about helping us choose the best activities. Ive got to think that the jet boat experience that Win suggested for us with Joran on the Wairaurahiri river is the best jet boat tour in the country. We wouldn't have know about it if it weren't for our hosts. In general, they took it upon themselves to make sure that we made the most of each day, and didn't miss any of the special stuff. They are knowledgable, fun to talk to, and generally interesting people. I won't mention all the particulars that Winn and Henrik did for my father and I because I don't want to commit them to anything specific, but lets just say they went over and above what Im used to at any B&B.

The B&B was also a great place to come back to at night. The bedrooms, kitchen and porch layout was just perfect for my father and I. And it was great to be able to roam the huge farm in the morning or evenings, look at stars, or pet the animals. The food that was provided to us, either for us to cook (eggs, bacon etc.) or that was made for us, cakes, bread, etc. was just fantastic.

I would recommend Te Anau area and Winn and Henrik's B&B highly, as long as you don't take our space when we want to come back!

We came back after 3 years to spend 3 nights. What a pleasure to stay again in such a place, everything is perfect: large rooms and kitchen, very nicely decorated and everything to be at home.
Win and Henrik are lovely hosts and they share their passion for farming with us !
When we arrived the fridge was full of delicious farm food for breakfast or supper with a bead freshly baked by Win ! What a treat !!!!!
Thank you !
