“Everything but ordinary!”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

We went there just by chance, after our visit to Mildford Sound. We rented a tiny rustic hut, with a bunk bed and nothing else in it and we had a really good night's rest. But what's best is the common kitchen and closed dining area, which is pretty new and well equipped. So finally, there was an escape from the sandflies! ;)
At night, we went into the surrounding forest, following the directions of the camp owner, and found a small cove with many glowworms in it. This was really magical! When you stay at this camp, you really feel like you're away from everything. And part of that experience is that they turn off the generator at 10 pm and everything gets dark. So this place is everything else but an ordinary campsite!

I've visited Gunn's camp a few times over the years and on my last visit I was pleased to see that even though it still retains it's "rustic" charm they have built a new kitchen/dining area. Very big with a fire and gas cookers, plenty of seating and tables. There is a veranda outside as well as new toilets inside.
I choose to stay in Pop's Hut, a great little place with two bunks a pot belly stove and a tap over a sink.
The people who run it are friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble.
I look forward to my next visit.

A group of five of us stayed in one of the cabins. The place is full of history and the owners obviously have a great sense of humour with all the little signs around. It was raining most of the time but the hut was cosy with the little logburner we had going. The owner kept the boiler in the shower block stoked so we had some nice warm showers. Power came on for lights 6pm-10pm.

The setting was absolutely beautiful. Bush-clad mountains all around, and right next to a river. In the morning there was an icing-sugar dusting of snow on top of the hills.

Certainly not 5-star but was perfect for what we were wanting.

Room Tip: The standard huts sleep 6, with a bedroom at each end containing a bunk bed and a single. In the mid...

This place was unexpected in our trip. We didn't know where we were going to camp for the night and just happened to pass by; so glad we did. Loved all the quirky signs; so creative and cute. The owners, Lyn and Reid, were so nice too. One note of advice, beware of the sandflies, but those who live in this area would already know that. Was really impressed at how well the campground made sure to keep the buildings sandfly free. Highly recommend this place.

this isnt luxury accomodation, it's basic but raesonable accomodation.
its one of the few places where you can stay in the middle of the fiordland wilderness, easy access to some of the worlds best hiking, hollyford and routeburn tracks are close by, milford sound is half an hours drive away.... extremely quiet, extremely picturesque, in a fantastic glaciated valley, peaks rise steeply 7000 feet above.... fantastic naive bush.... interesting museum there on the history of the area. dont expect an internet connection or cell phone connection or even a landline phone or tv! this is where you go to really get away from it all....

A very unique and quirky camp in the middle of nowhere. I came as part of a bus tour so it was a bit of a strange one for us a there didn't seem to be a lot of point in us visiting... but it was a lovely place anyway and provided very well for backpackers. There was a huge block with tables, chairs and sofas for us to hang out in. Also a large and very well equipped kitchen (the ONLY accommodation in 3 months of travelling Australia and New Zealand where I have found a pair of scissors provided in the kitchen!). The rooms were little cabins split into two rooms, each with 6 bunks in. The bunks were large and comfortable, definitely better than I was imagining for the camp.
With a quirky place like this comes some strange little rules like the electricity was only available between 5 and 10pm. Guaranteed early night all round then! Shower block was a walk away from the cabins, but showers/basins were fine, nice and hot.
There are quirky signs and little knick knacks around the place which is interesting. I wouldn't come back though.

We discovered this lovely place when we were looking for a refuge because of the bad weather on Routeburn track. My first impression… what the hell is this? Many weird signs and small huts with smoking roofs next to wild river painting scenery of an old gold mining village. But it isn’t. It’s the unique Gunn’s Camp. A place where you can spend the night in old fashioned and uncomfortable huts and also a place where are close to the nature. It’s more than a refuge during rainy days at Milford Sound actually you should plan to stop there. The beds aren’t so nice but the huts are with ovens and offer a nice wilderness experience. The wood fired showers are amazing and the kitchen and lounge area are brand new and a good place to spend time on rainy days. A good stop to Milford Sound before all the cars coming from Te Anau in the morning and also a good start to Routeburn Track.
