After reading bad reviews from fellow travelers, we were skeptical but decided to go for it.Thank goodness, our room was newly renovated. it was comfortable, overlooking the mountains. the bath room was a gem. my wife especially loved the washbasin - black with sparkles. just beautiful she said.

If you arrive late afternoon and leave early morning this would be ok, however the reviews here are justified. The receptionist working the day we arrived was great, very helpful and friendly however the rooms are below backpacker standard, definitely better rooms in some hostels!! It is a 15 minute walk to town to, easy enough but in a small town it's strange!! Would look beyond next time!!

First the good points about the Fjordland Hotel and Motel in Te Anau. It's spacious, handy and clean and the staff work very hard and are anxious to please. There's no holes in the carpets and nothing is dropping off the walls. Apart from that it's pretty shabby. The owners don't appear to have upgraded since the 70s. Whilst there's every apliance you could want, none fill you with confidence. To fill a sink for washing up or to take a shower must go a long way towards draining Lake Te Anau as it takes sooo long to get hot water. The cold nature is reinforced by the fridge which froze our milk, butter and cheese! The walls are thin - we could here every sound from the occupants of the unit two doors away. However, the worst point was without doubt one of the worst issues to arise at any of our stops around NZ, and I hesitate to be too full in my description. Suffice to say that the ill fitting of the patio doors pose a serious security issue for the room we stayed in.

Basic room with only tea/coffee equipment. It's looking a bit old but it was clean and it is worth it for its price.

Stayed in the deluxe hotel room.. Apart from the bathroom, everything else seems to be falling apart.
Beds were sinking in, power plugs doesn't work( fridge and kettle have no power), sliding door couldn't be closed properly because it was out of alignment.
It the deluxe studio was the "quiet gems in the hotel's crown" as stated per their website, I would really hate to see what's on offer at the motel wing..
No free wi fi, 10 min drive into town (lake).
Don't tempt fate and ruin a nice holiday.. Steer clear of this dump.
