Quite an expensive place to stay and to be honest, there are better/cheaper places around the town.

Internet access was extremely expensive and there is NO LIFT!

On the whole, a soulless place, that just wants your money. I would've given it a lower rate had it not been directly in front of the lake, giving great views.

My tip? If you stay here, eat and get FREE wifi somewhere else.

There is nothing special about this hotel, its hot bad just a typical big chain establishment, in a good location.

The rooms are comfy and have everything you would expect.

Two big negative points.
Terrible expensive wifi. Surely a large chain can afford to offer free wifi? We ate out several times to make use of free wifi at other locations in town.
Secondly, no lift? Hauling heavy sutcases up stairs is no fun for anyone!

Excellent location, but a little dated. Reception was very efficient and welcoming. Breakfast was very good, and dinner was average. The view of the lake and the mountains beyond is excellent. The motel could do with a make over, but it was excellent for a two night stay!

The hotel is walkable from the lake and main town center area ( ~15 mins). It is an oldish hotel. The service at the hotel is great and the staff is very helpful and friendly. The one complaint I have is the cleanliness of the room, the shower wall has some hair on it that was not form us (yuck!!!)

Dear Reviewer,

Thank you for taking the time to post a review regarding your recent stay at the hotel. I am pleased to read that you found the service friendly and helpful. However disappointed that the hairs on the shower wall were not found by the housekeeping supervisor on inspection prior to your check in.

Stayed at this hotel for 2 nights for a trip to the glowworm cave and Mildford Sound.
Room is adequate and clean although a bit run down. No view of the Lake although it is just across the road from the hotel. We were given a room on the second floor near the stairs. There were no lift so it was an effort to lug our luggages up the stairs. On our second night, we noted a bus load of tourist. On the very next day, we were woken up at 6 a.m. by the sound of 30 luggages banging down the stairs.

Location was ok as it is wihin 5 minutes from Real Journeys (which arranges the trip to the glowworm cave) and from the town centre. If you do not want to spend too much money for a stop over stay to Milford sound, this is a good option.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the stairs

We booked to stay here when we had family staying with us over the summer. I thought being a branded hotel chain it would be a sure bet for a great stay.

If by a great stay you mean a filthy room, a dirty bathroom, dusty surfaces, dirty curtains and unhoovered floor, wall paper peeling off the walls, dirty marks on the walls and walls not filled in where pictures had been taken down then this is the place to be.

I was so disappointed and embarrassed that my family might be staying in room with similar issues, thankfully not. I will say that the duty manager was very good and cleaned the room, but still it should not have come to that in the first place!!

The other slight problem, and I consider this to be just as bad as the filthy room, our room was over reception, in the morning when all the coaches are ready for the off, the coaches pull up outside reception and keep their engines running whilst people check out etc. Over 40 minutes one coach was running for, as it was a lovely hot summers day we had our window open, which meant the fumes from the coach were coming directly into our room. Yet again I felt compelled to call reception and ask them to deal with it, which again in fairness they did.

I would not stay here again and in all good faith sadly I can not recommend this hotel.

Dear Reviewer,
Disappointed to recieve your review 11 months after your stay at the hotel. At this stage I can only offer you my apologies for the overall cleaniness and maintenance of your room. I was pleased that the Duty staff were able to rectify some of the issues you encountered.
I believe that the housekeeping and maintenance issues have been resolved.

Kind Regards

Te Anau is a small town located on the way to Milford Sound, which is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the west coast of New Zealand’s south island. Consequently it usually is chocked full of tourists holed up for the night before they make the trip out to the sound.
The Kingsgate hotel is one of many hotels that cater to these travelers, who either arrive in rental cars or tour buses.
The Kingsgate is a basic type of hotel, nothing fancy but very nice. It is well maintained, clean and comfortable with nice views of very picturesque Lake Te Anau. Staff is friendly and helpful with advice for your drive out to Milford Sound.
