We stayed one night in a triple cottage and due to a road blockage and cancelled Milford Sounds cruise we ended up staying a second night in one of the dorm rooms. It was fine for a couple of nights but nothing extra ordinary and the service was a bit dour.
The hostel kitchen was busy but the oven etc seemed a little dirty and I didn't feel comfortable eating in there (although I am quite fussy with communal kitchens generally!). It's adequate but don't expect too much.
Location was on the lakefront which was nice and it's only a small place so easy to walk down to the main strip (if you can call it that!). I wouldn't spend too much time in Te Anau itself if you can help it.
