Nice trip but if had to choose, I prefer Doubtful Sound. It seemed a little too commercialised and too many tour groups (even in winter). Did get to see dolphins which was exciting.

I did the day trip...wow what views...i would really recommend going to Milford Sound..in my brief experience..dont drive yourself..let the coach take the strain..its a long winding road there & you travel on the same route back!!

We stayed in Te Anau for the weekend, about 120km away. The drive to Milford Sound is spectacular. We booked a cruise through Real Journeys, on the Milford Mariner. The cruise itself lasted about an hour and a half, maybe more. It might have been a bit chilly, but the scenery is amazing. We went to the mouth of the Tasman Sea, the captain even set the sails. Definitely a must do when traveling in the South Island of New Zealand!

A very early start from Te Anau but worth it. The coach journey through the most incredible country. Saw Kias on a short stop, wow! The cruise on Milford Sound wonderful through the most beautful scenery, and lucky to see dolphins and fur seals. Was very lucky the weather was lovely. Lunch buffet excellent and plentiful. I will always remeber this wonderful day.

Kiwi Discoveries Tour. New Zealand owner and planned! It's a long day, but will worth the tour. It snowed two days before our tour so there was snow low, very low on the farms and just gorgeous to see. I can understand how "The Remarkable's" go their name.
If you have no option to order lunch for the boat cruise I suggest getting something the evening before in town. If too many busses arrive at the same time you may be pushing for time at Te Anau.
A fixed wing or chopper flight home is possible if you don't decide until arriving at the Milford Sound.
P.S. There is a toilet on the bus if you need to go too.
