Came here on a cruise, and although the weather was unsettled it was a magical experience. The sights and sounds are just wonderful and the place is a must if you just like nature. On the cruise we spent the whole day just cruising round all the different sounds on a magical tour of the south island of New Zealand.

It is beautiful place, worth to be visited.
It needs 5 hours traveling distance from Queenstown, approx. 400km, because the route has to go curving through Te Anau, while the straight line drawn distance on the map is only 70 km. Recently there are business groups want to build shortcut with monorail or tunnel to cut the distance, however, so far the NZ Government still decline and reject the proposal.
Anyway, you have to spend the whole day to visit. The tour bus started at 8.30am from Queenstown and on the way stopped at Te Anau for brunch, and arrive Milford Sound after 2pm, with several stops at scenery look outs.
Approx. 15km before the final destination, there is a 1.2km long single lane tunnel (Homer Tunnel) and the traffics have to share to use it.
Finally, Milford Sound. At the ferry terminal, there are different Ferries available, you choose it, or it is already included in your tour package.
Then, for 1.5 hours return trip at the Milford Sound (on the ferry), the fjord, the water, the scenery, the rock, just beautiful. Plus a bonus, see SEALS at a very close distance from the ferry.
Whatever the weather is, either in the bright sky where the view is stunning, or the mist of the rain, when suddenly plenty of waterfall are created falling over the rocks, it just spectacular.
Then the trip back to Queenstown started around 4pm with quick stop for takeaway dinner at Te Anau and arrived at Queenstown around 9.30pm.
It is 13 hours trip, but not to be missed when visited Queenstown or south part of South Island.
Photos can say a lot more than words, see my photos attached.

Since we were going in the winter we knew that the road could be an issue and it was. The road was closed the two days before we got there, but was going to the open the afternoon that we were going up. So we booked a coach tour (highly recommended so that everyone can enjoy the views and the commentary and relax) and left not knowing if they would open the pass. We waited at the bottom of the pass for a few hours then they opened it long enough for everyone to get over the pass, get on the lake for a quick tour, then back over the pass before 4:30pm.
While the drive and sound were beautiful, it would have been nice to have more time at the sound to walk around and relax a bit more. We were so rushed around because of the road issues that we really couldn't enjoy much.
So while it was beautiful with the snow, we would recommend going during the summer or fall.

We arrived at the sound with a plane by Air Wakatipu and then boarded with Jucy Cruise.
Milford Sound is quite impressive. Another natural wonder (there are quite a few in New Zealand).
We enjoyed our time cruising among nice landscapes, waterfalls, seals. Learning much about the area thanks to the pilot of the Cessna and the "captain" of the boat, both very informative.
Not to be missed, otherwise you will regret not having been here.
We chose to get here by plane, views from above are spectacular.
