We stayed at Takaro for a 5 day stay, and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. While Takaro is off the beaten path, and not a place that you would stumble into, after settling in we enjoyed the quiet and tranquility of it.
We found Joel, the owner/host, to be very engaging and accomodating who worked very hard to make our stay a pleasant and enjoyable one. The staff was also first rate, very professional, and equally attuned to making our visit a great one. Their spa was excellent, and the staff there very professional, courteous and competent.
The food was nearly all organic, raised on the property for the most part, and the preparation literally could not have been better. The chef was excellent, so much so that we asked Joel to have her come out of the kitchen so that we could meet her and compliment her on how great the food was. We were in New Zealand for 3 weeks, and Takaro Lodge had the best food we had during our entire stay.
While Takaro Lodge is "rustic" in some ways, it is a place that we quickly came to appreciate for all the reasons above. We will likely make a return visit to New Zealand, and will definitely return to Takaro when we do.
