we were advised to go to Doubtful as Milford is so busy.. Great advice. We did the overnight on the Tutoko II. Only 5 of us plus Sean and Maria. The boat is not luxury but its very tidy and a "proper" boat.
We saw penguins, dolphins and whales. Maria dived for the cray fish and we fished for the main course.
We even got in a bit of kayaking.
Sean and Maria were excellent hosts and even though its only an overnight , with the trip across the lake and the transfers it felt like a longer get away.

Doubtful is very very beautiful, High recommended!

one warning. coat up with the repellent. The sand fly bites itch like hell and last for days.

We took this day excursion with Real Journeys. Coach, boat, Coach and boat, including a visit to the Power Station.
Very good tour and well worth it. Very well run and organised. Guides and staff all excellent and good knowledge as well
Superb scenery and a trip not to be missed

We did an overnight cruise. It was after heavy rain. There were hundreds of waterfall because of the rain. Huge waterfalls and small waterfalls. Some areas are misty. We saw penguin, seabirds and seals. Wonderful memory.

A good trip but there was a first longish (50 mins) boat trip across the lake, then a very interesting tour of the hydraulic system, then the trip on Doubtful Sound. It is huge but very beautiful.
We left at 7.10am and got back at 4.30pm!! Also, take a packed lunch as although free hot drinks are offered free of charge, there is absolutely nothing else on board!!

Thank Belinda C

After being to Milford 4 times and having recommended Doubtful Sound so many times when I was running hotel in Queenstown I thought that it was high time I experienced it myself.
The day started at 8.00am with the Go Orange coach picking us up. The company that owns Go Orange has a parent company which charges more and has newer boats and coaches. We saved $75.00 by taking the one with the older ones.
We were then taken to Lake Manapouri then sailed across the lake. Idyllic weather with hardly a ripple on the lake. Next leg was via coach up to and then down the long tunnel to the Manapouri power station which supplies 12% of NZ's power. Very impressive.
Next leg was the trip over to Doubtful Sound which meant a coach ride across the pass to the top which has a stunning view of the Sound. We then boarded the vessel which took us on a slow journey out to the Tasman Sea. We saw yellow eyed penguins, fur seals and the real feature was the dolphins that played with the boat on the journey back.
Over all a great trip, Doubtful is much bigger than Milford and not nearly as crowded well worth the visit. If we had more time we would have probably done the over night trip.
There are lunches available if you pre-order them at $20.00 each a brown paper bag which is given to you before you depart Manapouri but we bought a very nice picnic with us which was much more impressive and a lot cheaper.
