“Slick, well run hostel bit clinical”
Reviewed 18 January 2013

Te Anau isn't the most rocking of towns but this hostel tries it's best and provides a nice respite to break up the journey back from Milford Sound. Highly recommend the place with the yellow door just down the road for something to eat, I wish I could remember the name! Hostel is slick to the point of almost clinical, but very clean and tidy. Would be nice if there were a couple more plug sockets in the room and the bed side lamps actually had somewhere to plug into.... Bathrooms were very clean as was the kitchen. Nice touch with the recycling chutes inside the kitchen which empty straight into the bins outside. Can't really fault the place, it just wasn't my sort of hostel...

for a hostel this place is really great quality.we booked a private room, while the room was small it was spotless and warm.the kitchen area was very large and they also have an outside bbq area aswell.the communal area is quite nice and they also have a fireplace.across the park beside the hostel if a fish and chip van,we got food there it was gorgeous you wont be dissapointed.if you are interested in hiking and activities around the area i would recommend this place as a way of meeting similar type people.

This YHA has a really nice relaxed atmosphere. This is a really nice set-up. Lovely garden with outside or under-cover tables to eat at. Great kitchen facilities and nice views. We had a great chill out time here after our tramping trip. Wish we had stayed another night.

I stayed there before and after my Milford Trek. It was actually a bit of a staging ground: Two people in my hiking group were staying there too, as it turned out, and as first-time hiker I was relieved to go into this with two friends already.
The staff was friendly, the location good, and the amenities clean and welcoming. My room (in the little cabin in the yard) was a bit crowded but had its own bathroom and kitchen.
I was able to use a locker for the things I didn't want to leave in the car while out hiking, which I appreciated.

The staffs are very helpful and friendly. The hostel is bright and clean and there're lots of places to sit and chill out. It's not far away from the city center. The living room (tv room) is bright and very cozy. They have book exchange and there're lots of dvds and books which you can borrow them from the reception. The place has a complete information of the weather/ general detail/ and the road condition to Milford Sound as well as some other places and activities around the region. The room is clean and quiet (except we had some rude neighbors knocking real hard on our wall in the middle of the night, but that's not the hostel's fault anyway). The kitchen and bathroom are also very clean and well function.

During our stay, there was an awesome Christmas barbecue held by the hostel staff in the backyard!

We stayed in Rooms 4 and 5 (full with ensuite)

Pluses
+Convenient location
+Large dining hall and kitchen

Minuses
-Front desk was pretty disinterested and not very helpful. We should have double checked but I wish they would've mentioned or posted the multiple day road closure to Milford Sound....
-Bedrooms were very small (backpack, not suitcase size)
-Don't use the blue towels on your face! It leaves blue lint everywhere!!!

When first arriving in the town during the middle of winter i was struck by how 'dead' the town was. Shops had signs up saying closed for winter and hardly anyone was about. After finding the yha i was greeted by a very friendly man who was more than happy to help us with us luggage to the room and show us around the place. A wonderful atmosphere with a wood fire and there was lots of information in the dinning area/ lounge area which helped alot as most of the town was closed. Rooms were warm and cosy, not overly large but for the price you pay it was more than big enough.
