“Hiking Stayover”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 January 2013

Good points - We spent three nights here in two separate stints at the beginning of a hike and in between hikes. Spacious room for three and fully self contained. Restaurant looked nice though we didn't eat there. The 'village' look was quite appealing and gave the place some character. Location was ok - Close to shops, bars, restaurants, and a big park with gardens across the road, lake down the road. Staff were friendly and they let us store our non-hiking gears in their garage in between the Milford track and Routeburn track hikes which was great because after we got out of the Routeburn we returned to pick up our gears and carried on with the rest of our Sth Island holiday.

Not so great - I thought the washing and drying machines were a bit steep at $5 per load each, but I suppose they were commercial machinery so were larger. However, $20 later it seemed a bit steep. Could've done with a clothes line because the weather was absolutely brilliant. Overall, enjoyed our stay here and would go back if visiting the region again.

Situated on the road into Te Anau.It is walking distance from the lake front and other amenities. The units all have a Western facade overlooking a central square where the cars..not horses park. This is the " Village" in the hotel name. Our unit was clean and spacious with 2 suitcase holders..a rarity in other places we stayed. The kitchen was well equipped with a good sized fridge and hot plates. The bathroom was separate from the toilet. The receptionist was friendly and helpful. Beakfast was good. Restaurant was not open when we stayed but it was no hardship as there were ample eating places nearby.

A western theme styled hotel, clean and tidy, good sized rooms. Well priced, however as expected at that price it does not match more expensive hotels, the bathroom is dated, but clean and functional; no sky tv, but then again in such a beautiful part of New Zealand you don't want to be inside watching tv. Good location, within 5 min walk from the main shopping street, the lake and community centre.

Very friendly accommodating staff.

Sorry I can't comment on the restuarant as did not eat there

I am glad that, after your first thoughts on seeing The Village Inn, you found that it was such a great place to stay for a couple of nights. You are correct in saying that it is very quiet in winter, but completely opposite in the summer period.
thank you very much for your excellent review.

The Village Inn in Te Anau is one of the few places in town not to boast a mountain or lake view in it's name but at least they are being honest. All the units have a different facade and togeather the make up a 'Village' from the late early 20th century. Fortunately the units are much more up to date and the one we stayed in was very clean, spacious and modern with great beds, TV, a good shower and a bath. Our deal, which we bought off the Mainstay Hotels website, included breakfast. I note that some of the reviews of this place from 4 or 5 years ago don't say nice things about the breakfast with one couple only getting one and a half pieces of toast between them! Trust me, things have changed. We were given 10 pieces of toast between the two of us and then offered more after we finished those. The breakfast we had was continental which can vary immensely but ours was good and consisted of a buffet choice of fruit juices, cereals, yoghurts, three different types canned fruit, with toast and coffee served at the table. Cooked breakfast is also available but not with our deal although we could have upgraded.
Even though it isn't the poshest hotel I have ever stayed at, it was probably the service from the friendly staff which has made me score it five stars.

Very easy weekend away. I was welcomed by name even before I got to the reception desk and the unit we had was modern, clean, spacious and comfortable. Breakfast was good - i had the basic breakfast and got a free 4 cup plunger of fresh coffee just by being there. We will definitely return. The TV was good but sort of expected SKY sports - no SKY.

Room Tip: The exteriors are themed = we stayed in The Lockup.
