We Stayed here early in the new Year, The amazing service all strarted when we drove upto the hugh log doors which swung open to be greeted by the manager Andy,(this is unusual as most places just have young dressed up staff greet you) Andy grabbed our bags and welcomed us in, we were shown around this beautiful magestic lodge and Andy could just about tell you where every log that holds up this huge building comes from,
We when to our room which was a standard lodge room and were imediately stunned by the full view of the lake and national park mountains WOW. The room was reasonable, nothing special but comfortable.
Over the three days of our stay we visited doubtful & milford sounds which is a must, we all so recieved amazing service from Monique and here team, the food cooked by James the chef who we had the pleasure of meeting on our second nite was out of this world better than most of melbournes top restaurants, the venison was the best i've ever had, my wife loved the groper and chocolate fondant, in fact she wants to return so James can cook for her birthday, the food is all local and much grown at the lodge.
Cheese and port by the fire is a must, What a piece of mastery the fire place is built out of local river stone it makes you feel so small, check out the logs as well or should I say trees. All in all we will return to Fiordland lodge to recieve the service and food that made our stay better than we could have dreamed well done Andy what a team you have
If I had any criticism it would be:
-there is no mini bar availible for free or purchase in the rooms (there is a great bar down stairs)
-a nice pool or spa or some other in house activity would be a great addition especially if you were here for a few days
-the young english guy who we only saw a few times needs more training on making coffee( this is slightly made up by the fact you can always find Andy or Monique to make one though)
The Fiordland Lodge was very comfortable and inviting, with friendly staff, personalized service and comfortable rooms. It was run with a family kind of atmosphere, where the staff come from many corners of the globe.
The highlight was definitely the everchanging view across Lake Te Anau to the mountains, where the clouds and light throughout the day were absolutely unpredictable. The use of so much wood gave the lodge its rustic feel. And, the short distances to any of the major trails or activities made the Fiordland Lodge a perfect retreat that was exclusive and intimate. The food is generally good to excellent.
Overall, a nice stay in a neat place.
For some travelers, these points may be helpful:
-The walls seemed very thin so that we could hear the muffled sound of neighbors talking/coughing/sneezing in the next room
-The bed is a spring mattress, not super firm; no headboard
- blanket consists of one top sheet, a wool blanket and a hotel bed covering
-The deck is one continuous strip shared by everyone on the same level; if you prefer a private deck with total privacy, you will not find it at Fiordland Lodge.
- bathrooms have heated tile floors: great for those with tendencies for cold feet
- the lodge is self-sustaining so that it treats its own sewage, grows its own eggs, recycles its garbage, etc
-For what you get in terms of room standard and in comparison to local prices, the cost of the room seems very high even with excellent meals included. If price is not a factor, and you just want a very quiet yet family style environment, this might be the right mix for you.
The key activities in the area are all centered on experiencing and enjoying the pristine natural surroundings whether by foot, horse, boat, car or air. Te Anau is calm and tranquil, boasting fewer crowds than Queenstown, and with friendly locals. There are plenty of fantastic hikes for all ages and abilities. For outdoor lovers, Te Anau and the Fiordland Lodge are a worthwhile visit.
This quiet lodge is very large by most lodge standards. Located at the top of a windy drive it commands a particularly breathtaking view of Lake Te Anau, We were warmly assisted to our room by the manager, Andy, who happily explained to us the points of interest surrounding the town of Te Anau, the spectacular Lake and the various trails we could discover. The large bathroom was fitted to luxurious standards with underfloor heating and solid timber vanity tops and high end toiletries which we welcomed after a particularly cold and rainy summer day of travel. The evening canapes, elegant dinner and wines were a delight and service did not disappoint..
Andy was most helpful in storing our luggage and securing our car as we departed for the Hollyford Track guided walk the next day. The Lodge is not inexpensive but it is in a class of its own for the area and Andy and his staff showed themselves to be professionals keen to make our experience of New Zealand and their lodge a memorable one.
My fiancee and I just returned from our honeymoon and we had the great opportunity to stay at Fiordland Lodge for two nights after a good friend recommended it. We could not have been more thrilled. We were upgraded to a nicer room upon checking in and that set the tone for an amazing three days. The chef there (James) is unreal. Dinner was included in the price of the hotel and I am so glad it was because normally I do not eat at hotels. This one deserves every ounce of praise. Everything from the Cairnuir Olive Oil to the great wine list (we loved the Pinot Noir from Gibbston Valley) to the actual food was incredible. James uses local produce and ingredients and everything was bursting with flavor. Our room itself was also fantastic with a great terrace facing the water, a very comfortable bed, and a spacious tub to soak in. The sunsets are great from the backyard. Every staff member we encountered was very nice and excited to talk with us about our travels. Andy (Concierge/Manager) was so helpful and kind and Jonathan (server) had great energy (as did our other servers the following night whose names I cannot remember). We seriously cannot say enough about this place and cannot wait to come back.
The minute Andy walked out of the door to welcome us, we knew that the Fiordland Lodge is not just a beautifully designed hotel at a stunning location. In every aspect the focus of management and staff is on you and how to make your stay perfect and memorable in every way. One could travel to New Zealand just to spend some time there.
