We managed to book into Cambpell AutoLodge on fairly short notice for the dates we were visiting. After reading the reviews about the property being a bit dated, we were a little worried, but since most of the reviews were positive and it was one of the few places which had rooms available, we decided to go for it.

In short, we were glad we did. Yes, the paint colors and some of the furniture seem to hearken back to the mid-70's, but if you can get past those humorously retro details, it really is a quite nice place to stay. The owners are very helpful and gracious and the accommodation is nicely situated with beautiful lake-front views and a short walk to town.

Campbell AutoLodge also boasted several amenities which we were happy to discover: both wired and wireless internet access (at no extra charge!), laundry facilities (only cost is for dryer time), and a kitchenette for when you just want a light meal at "home" instead of dining out for the umpteenth night in a row. You can sit out on the front lawn enjoying the lake view while sipping some tasty wine from Marlborough or Hawke's Bay. Rooms are spacious and clean. Beds are quite comfortable.

If and when we return to Te Anau, we might try one of the B&B's that we found to be already booked before going back to Campbell's, but would certainly consider it as our fall-back option if we, once again, fail to book early enough to get into one of the more upscale properties.

The Campbell AutoLodge is a well-run, if slightly dated, apartment-style motel on the banks of Lake Te Anau. The staff was warm and helpful, and there's no better place to use as a base for exploring Fiordlands and Milford Sound. Read on for details...

LOCATION:
The Campbell AutoLodge is on the lakefront road, with a beautiful view of Lake Te Anau from all rooms. If you're planning to visit Milford Sound, Te Anau is much closer than the more popular jumping-off point of Queenstown. Any excursion leaving here early AM will arrive long before the tourist buses, which is a great benefit on the 2-line winding road into the Fiordlands. Campbell is within easy walking distance of downtown, and right near the Nature Center, and the start of several of the most popular trekking trails.

ROOMS:
The spacious apartment-style rooms are clean and well-kept, but the decor and fixtures are a bit dated. The feel is something of a kick-back to the 1980's. Still, with large comfy recliner chairs in the living area, full stove, refrigerator and more, it's a lot more like living in a condo than a hotel. Cleaning service is not provided every day (except optionally, at additional charge), so if you're the sort who depends on daily maid service, then this might not be for you -- buf if you can keep your own space reasonably neat, it's a great benefit to be able to self-cater and really spread out in your apartment!

AMENITIES:
The hotel provides free wireless Internet, a guest laundry with free wash (pay to dry), and all of the equipment necessary to use the kitchen in your room. BBQ equipment on the front lawn is available for use by guests, and a car wash stall is available behind the lodge.

STAFF:
The friendly staff was very helpful with arranging meals and activities. When we were delayed due to weather and needed to arrive late, we called the hotel and they arranged to have our keys available along with the check-in paperwork long after the stated check-in times. They were very accommodating to a couple of adventurers who were arriving late and leaving early most days.

In general, we were thrilled with our stay at Campbell. While an upgrade to the decor and furniture would have made this a 5-star review, we were really very happy with our stay and would encourage anyone coming to Te Anau to give them a try!

After reading some of the previous reviews about the rooms being dated we became skeptical about staying at Campbell's and thought about changing our reservation. I am really glad we didn't! We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived. The rooms in fact are a bit dated, but attention has been paid to update them to the highest standard possible considering that the building is quite old. The room (I think they are all the same) was a very large one bedroom apartment, very clean and had a great view of the lake and the sunsets. We were on the second floor and knew someone staying on the first floor, and although not much different, our view was nicer, so I would ask for a second story room. As well, it is very conveniently located and walking distance to the "down town". My only complaint is that I had to pay to use the dryer (not the washer) and I wasn't expecting that, so I wasn't prepared with coins. Other than that, we have no complaints and would highly recommend this place to anyone staying in Te Anau. (Dinner at the Fat Duck was excellent.)

This is a nice, clean place right on the lake.

The owners are nice and well informed. They keep the property and the units very clean.

It is not fancy, but is a great place to stay in te Anau.

Didn't know what to expect but what a find! The owners were friendly and helpful. Fantastic unit with separate bedroom and good ktichen. Although the furniture decor and fittings were slightly out dated, they were spotless and we even had fresh flowers on the table when we got there! The views were great and we both managed to chill out and de stress for the 3 days we were there. it's so close to town and the tourist offices, it was easy to book Milford Sound etc. We would definately go back again, it was the best motel we stayed in during our month touring NZ

We were very pleased with the location and decor of our second floor unit. They offer complimentary internet if you have a laptop, complimentary washing machines and laundry soap, an ironing board and iron in the laundry room which is in a separate building out back. The dryer costs $3. They also provide a small bottle of milk, various teas, coffee and drinking chocolate. We were concerned it would be too warm in the bedroom without air conditioning but it cooled off nicely for sleeping and the bed was very comfortable. We had a lovely view from our shared balcony and the landscaping is beautiful.

We loved this motel! Campbell Autolodge offers everything you need for a comfortable stay, and all units look directly onto the lake. The rooms are enormous (by U.S. standards, at least)—they’re apartment style, so we had a large bedroom with a queen and twin beds, bathroom with a separate toilet, and a spacious living room area with kitchenette that had two burners, fridge and freezer (not just a freezer compartment), microwave, and plenty of kitchenware. They offer free wifi and local calls which is really nice, and they have on-site laundry. It’s an easy walk to the town center and a 5-minute drive to the Kepler Track.

The owners, Barry and Jenny, are really helpful, give good recommendations, and really do everything they can to make your stay comfortable--Barry even plucked some mint from their edible garden for me to use with dinner one night, and there were other details like that that made for a great stay.

We stayed here halfway through a 2 ½-week trip, and it was the perfect place to relax. A lot of people we knew stayed in town for just one night so they could easily see Milford or Doubtful Sounds; we stayed three nights and actually had time to sit on our patio and enjoy the lake view.
