Owner description: Visit the Te Anau Glowworm Caves - an underground network of limestone caves lit by hundreds of glowworms. In the darkness they produce a glittering display. Carved out by the force of the river, the underground world is surprisingly beautiful with whirlpools and roaring waterfalls. Begin with a scenic cruise across Lake Te Anau and then our nature guides will take you in groups through the caves and then in a small boat into the grotto. Departs Te Anau.

Definitely one of he biggest highlight for the trip. The actual journey through the caves was an excitement in itself. The educational session about the glow worms was also very informative. If you only have a day in the area, this is the one you should choose.

It is some time since I have been to the Glow worm caves but would still encourage people to check out this trip - by boat across Lake Te Anau & then underground. All very safe but don't take children if they don't like the dark & can't keep quiet in a small boat :-) And wear flat shoes. May also be cool, & damp, in the cave.
Many years ago it was much more of an 'adventure' but safety regulations have changed that & you don't climb steep ladders beside a waterfall, tho you still have to bend for a short distance to get under rocks.
Any time of the day is good including the evening. If there has been a lot of rain in the Mountains, the caves are closed.
Good information & explanations from the guides. Ask questions if you want to know more.
I went to Waitomo many years ago but this is completely different & much more exciting

For an experience that is amazing take a trip through the Te Anau Caves. It combines a catamaran trip through the beautiful wilderness of Te Anau Lake, before landing on the far side where you are given information on the life cycle of the glowworms so that you can best appreciate the experience, followed by a trip to the underworld. There you are guided through walkways, which provide a stunning view of the fierce torrent of water flowing over the underground waterfall into the swirling pool below, before going on board a small boat through the glowworm chambers. The first glimpse of the glowworms is truly magical: it is like a miniature starry sky with the shimmering, bluish-white glow from these creatures – but wear a hood or hat, just in case one of the long, dangling, silky, sticky threads should come loose! We thought this experience was better than the Waitomo Caves.

We arrived in Te Anau late one afternoon and went to the booking office to book ticket for Milford Sound trip for the next day, we were offered a discount if we did the Glow Worm Caves on the last trip of the night. We took this option and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The guides were very knowledgeable and happy to answer questions. Going on the last tour of the night work well as the size of the party was a lot smaller than during the day. For a nice evening take the last tour you get back about 10.30pm but worth it.
