“Great value for money”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 March 2007

I stayed here in Feb 2007 with two other members of my family and booked a two bedroom unit (#9). Upon checking in we were greeted by the very friendly host who instantly recommended a few places in town to see and places to eat.

Our unit was a good size and clean which is something I'm very fussy about. My only complaints would be that the fan in the bathroom was useless and the shower curtain over the spa bath could have done with being replaced. Other than that I found the Bella Vista to be in a good, quiet location (walkable to everything), had ample ameneties (including free in-room broadband if you have your own laptop) and was good value for money.

Other advice for Te Anau would be to visit the glow worm caves and the Bird Sanctuary at the south end of the town - probably the only chance you'll get to see a living Kakapo. For evening entertainment I would recommend Happy Hour at The Moose (I ordered a round of three drinks and got change from $10!). Also The Ranch restaurant is worth a visit as it has good sized portions for the money and is very tasty.

If you're going to visit Milford Sound I would suggest getting up early to beat all the bus loads of tourists driving up the Milford Road - it's a stunning road and shouldn't be missed (just make sure you take lots of bug repellant for those nasty sandflies!)

To say we had only booked a mini studio it was about the same as you would get in the UK as normal hotle room! It's a very pretty little motel only 10 mins walk across the park to shops and the Esplanade. Lovely clean town. We enjoyed our stay at Bella Vista and would highly recommend it!

Bella Vista Te Anau

Bella Vista Te Anau is part of a nationwide chain of motels across New Zealand and they are all pretty much the same. The plus with this particular motel is that it is located off of the main streets on a side street, so you miss all of the traffic. Also it is a small motel that doesn’t cater to the tour bus crowds going to Milford Sound, so you miss all of the associated racket that goes with tour groups.

It’s about a 2 minute walk to Lake Te Anau and about 3-4 minutes to the main street where most of the restaurants and shops are located.

The room I had was very clean and well presented. I got the smallest room available, but since it was just me that worked fine and the room was stocked with everything one could need.

I highly recommend this motel and will stay there again when I return to Te Anau.

We have just arrived home after 16 days in NZ and we stayed in Bella Vista's in more than 1 city - including Te Anau and they were very good. Rooms are all the same, staff helpful in making bookings and the beauty is that it's like MacDonalds - you know exactly what to expect. It made travelling without advance reservations easy. It was very reasonable accomodation for Canadians.

Agree completely with the previous reviews.

I stayed here 3 nights in a mini studio. It might be a little small for 2 people. Very modern design. Quiet, and like others said, it's an easy walk (one street over) to the main drag where the restaurants/cafes are. Good jogging along Lake Te Anau too.

They had laundry facilities--soap was free, but it was NZ$6 to wash and to dry, or you could use the free clotheslines outside to dry.

Another great perk that the other reviewers did not mention: the motel owners can book any excursion you want, give you a voucher for it, and have it charged to the room. They don't work with just one company--you're free to have them look for other tours. I chose a Milford kayaking tour, and the owner had no problem getting me the voucher for that. Highly recommend a kayak tour on either the Milford or Doubtful sound, and do not recommend a general cruise (the boats were too crowded, and you don't get much a close-up view of anything--you blow by it at 20 knots). Try one of the "treks" instead. Glowworm cave was nice, but skippable if you've been to Waitomo.

I would have to say of all the places I stayed in on the South Island, this place was definitely the best in terms of value for money. The room was spotless, beds were comfy, bathroom was super clean and the room rate was very reasonable at $110/night. And so close to town that you can walk into the city to grab your dinner. The hotel owners are extremely friendly and make you feel welcome. Although I did not get a chance to stay at any of the other Bella Vista locations, I definitely will try the other ones on my next visit to the South Island due to my great experience in Te Anau. Would highly recommend this motel and will undoubtedly return.

This low to moderately priced modern chain has been rapidly expanding all over New Zealand and it is welcome in Te Anau where accomodations tend to be overpriced especially in the summer. The mini studio I had was new, quiet, clean, comfortable, and very reasonably priced. It was small and perfect for one person or two people who don't need much space. It was designed well to take advantage of the space since the large suitcase I had fit on the shelf in the closet. The room had a TV, phone, alarm clock, bathroom, comfortable bed, and that's about it. However I don't need kitchen facilities or other extras so it's perfect. It is a quick 2 minute walk into town. The staff is friendly and helpful.
