This was our 3rd stop on our tour of New Zealand, we stayed two nights and I would have happily stayed a week. We stayed at 15 different accommodations and this was one of my favourites.

We booked the largest unit which was purpose built over the garages. Helen calls it a unit but it’s too nice to be called a unit, it is an apartment. Although attached to the main house (accessed by Helen when servicing via an internal door), the apartment has its own entrance. This is accessed by a staircase which culminates in a balcony with 2 chairs and table.

There is a large entrance hall with a dining/kitchenette at one end, a walk-in storage/wardrobe room with iron and ironing board, shower room with huge shower and beautiful wooden vanity unit & wc. Then there is the bedroom/lounge which has a huge window with a view of the mountains. This is furnished with a large bed, bedside cabinets,TV, coffee table and two comfy armchairs with matching footstools – great for aching feet at the end of the day.

Breakfast is provided in the fridge – bread, eggs, milk, yoghurt, orange juice, fruit and butter. There are also teas, coffee, cereals and jams provided. There are no cooking facilities, but a toaster, kettle, microwave and omelette maker are all provided. Helen will do the washing up for you as there is no sink.

Helen is very friendly and is very willing to chat if you want to, but doesn’t push herself; we didn’t see Chris whilst we were there. The whole apartment was spotlessly clean and free wifi is available. I have not included any photos as there are already quite a few posted by previous reviewers.

It is about 750 metres into town – an 8-10 min walk, and about 550 metres in the other direction to the lake.

I would love the opportunity to stay here again.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for large unit - it's well worth it for the space and view

Helen totally spoilt us, not only was it inexpensive, we had a fantastic little suit that was exceptionally clean. Our room was serviced daily and had a great assortment of breakfast goodies.

Helen is an amazing hostess who really takes pride in her product.

Definitely a great base for Doubtful Sound or for you trip up to Milford Sound.

Not the best place we stayed in, but still acceptable. Only a short drive from the river, and overall the room was very comfortable, and there were ample room provisons for breakfast, which you made for yourself. We were looking for a lake view motel, but weren't at all disappointed with Antler Lodge. Nice and quiet, which is very important

Stayed here just one night, four of us (2 adults, 2 children) before heading out to Doubtful Sound. It was clean, quiet, and the owners were very friendly and welcoming. The town had many interesting things to see and some good restaurants, too. The lake is utterly gorgeous and we wish that we'd stayed there a few more days to explore the area more. Would definitely stay here again.

Helen provided a warm welcome, answered my many questions and recommended activities and places to eat to make the most of our short trip to Te Anau. We stayed in Unit 1 and it was great value, comfortable, clean and self-sufficient. After a big day driving to Milford, we appreciated the space to be able to eat our takeaway dinner and the free wifi. The continental breakfast provided was great and allowed us to get an early start in the car without bothering anybody.

I left my camera charger behind and arranged with Chris (who was extremely helpful) for it to be posted back to Australia. I recommend this place for a warm kiwi welcome.

We stayed upstairs in unit 3. It was very spacious & very clean.
A lovely diy breakfast was provided in the fridge.
We used our car to go to the lake front & town.

This place is a hidden gem - more like a 'granny flat' than holiday accommodation. The owners are really friendly and made us feel at home. Wonderful views towards the mountains. Short walk to the town centre and ideal base for Milford Sound. Stayed for three nights and weather was good.
