We stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment on the ground floor. The apartment was nicely furnished and the bedrooms were a good size. The living area was a little small, however this was not a problem with TVs in each of the bedrooms. A nice touch was the aromatherapy bath bag for relaxation. My only negative comment was that the views across to the lake were beautiful, however we could not see these from our room as our view as blocked by the carpark. If you stay here I would recommend a first floor room as they have unobstructed views. Overall, however, the stay here was great and the host was excellent, assisting with bookings on a boat trip to Milford Sound.

If you are interested in staying at Radfords just keep in mind they do not allow one night stays. This may be different during the off-peak season though.

I inquired with Radfords about their room availability before and after we were due to hike one of the Great Walks and visit the Sounds. This was 3.5 months in advance of our departure dates but they refused to allow us to book for one night only, even though we wanted to book two nights.

We actually asked to pay for two nights, and requested one of their nicer rooms at a higher price. The two nights just happened to be three nights apart due to the timing of the track walk (which is the only reason we were travelling to Te Anau). We ofcourse have no control over this. We had already booked our accommodation in Christchurch and Queenstown before and after, so cannot simply pay for an extra consecutive night just because Radfords want us to.

While I understand they are a business and want to make money, I find it rather distastful that they feel they can dictate how long guests can stay in their motel and in what order. We ofcourse will be staying elsewhere.

Room was well presented with excellent spa bath. Little touches like chocolates on the pillow made it a pleasure to stay here. The pillows themselves could have been better and the bed a little bigger but not a big thing.

The level of service from reception was outstanding - problems with the weather meant that our intended drive through to Milford Sound couldn't take place but the lady on reception cancelled our trip for us, booked us on another operator, kept us updated with emails, and suggested an excellent alternative.

My husband and I spent three weeks in NZ in late May and June. We stayed at the Intercontinental in Wellington but otherwise in motels such as Radford's. We loved Radford's. The location (on the water and a few minutes' walk from the main street) was terrific. The room was well-appointed and tastefully decorated with everything we could want in the kitchenette. The laundry facilities were the least expensive of any place we were in NZ. The office had board games and books to borrow. And there were more TV stations available at Radford's than at the Intercontinental!

But what set it apart was the service. We had a long, long drive to Christchurch and wanted to set out by 6:30 a.m. The road through the mountains had been closed two days before because of snow, and if it were closed again we would have to go along the southern route. Although the office doesn't open until 8, Mrs. James, the proprietor, got up at 5:30 that morning to check road conditions and phoned us at 6 to say that the road was open. She was incredibly kind, and we appreciated that.

We tell all of our friends who plan to go to NZ to be sure to stay at Radford's.

We were planning to visit Milford Sound and had to stay one night in Te Anau. After reading through reviews from Tripadvisor, we booked a night's stay here and boy were we not disappointed! This has got to be one of the best motels we have stayed. We were greeted with a nice scent coming from the lovely potpourri satchets left on the beds. Rooms were extremely clean (we stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment on the ground floor), bathroom had a jacuzzi as well!! Beds were very comfy and pillows super fluffy!! Oh yes, a wide range of tea bags (7 different blends), hot chocolate, coffee were also provided for those who want to enjoy a cuppa while enjoying the view of the beautiful lake! The motel was also in a good location (facing Te Anau lake) and also within walking distance of the Real Journeys ferry terminal where we went for the glowworm caves tour at night.

We stayed here in March 2010 for three nights. We were happy that they moved us into an upstairs 2 bedroom unit as we requested but the rates were far and away the most expensive of our two week South Island trip. We stuck with our three night reservation despite the fact that the road to Milford Sound was closed during our entire stay. On the upside, the rooms are very clean and quiet, and having a kitchenette is convenient though the living room "furniture" (one couch) was smallish and uncomfortable. I was irritated, however, when a mysterious $20 additional charge appeared on my Visa card after I returned home. I did not receive a response to my inquiries about the reason for the charge; fortunately, Bank of America's customer service is better than Radford's and B of A waived the charge when I disputed it. At this point, I still have no idea why we were charged an additional fee post check-out.

Management response:Responded 25 May 2010

I am sorry that you feel unhappy with the service you received at Radfords Lakeview Motel. The extra $20 charge was for two lavender bags that were removed from a room used by one of your party. We do have notes on the bedroom coasters advising that these bags are for sale and available for purchase from reception. I did email you twice regarding this charge but unfortunately the emails were returned to us. I hope this clarifies the matter for you.
