“Absolutely love the place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 May 2014

My friends and I were in the south island for 11 days and stayed at 9 places. Te Anau Lodge is be far my favorite. No only the building itself is very unique, but also the manager George really made it felt like home. It was very nicely decorated, and the breakfast was excellent. George was very warm and helpful, and his dog, Ben, was so friendly. We were only there for two nights, but it was hard to say good-bye. Highly highly recommended!

Hello!!

So happy you had a great stay with us!! Lovely that George and Ben are definitely common factors in all our positive reviews :-) It`s a lovely building isn`t it!! We feel so lucky to be able to share it with so many people!!

Don`t think of it as a "good bye", maybe just more of a "see you again one day" :-)

Wishing you happy travels,

The team at Te Anau Lodge :-)

You don't usually associate convents with comfort, warmth, luxury, hospitality. Yet we experienced all of these at Te Anau Lodge. The host, George, and his staff made us welcome the moment we arrived, urging us to take advantage of all they have to offer - free drinks in the upstairs library/lounge, lift into town, open-air chess on the sprawling lawn outside, and help and advice with booking local activities. George even gave us a short rendition of Procul Harum's A Whiter Shade of Pale on the antique organ in the dining room when we asked if the old thing still worked (the instrument, that is). Breakfast was everything you'd need if preparing for a big day out hiking or fishing, and afternoon tea was delightful in the study with views out to the snow-capped mountains over the manicured lawns of the enormous garden. You can even have a nightcap after returning from dinner in Te Anau flicking through the books in the library. The building still has the feel of an old convent, with stained glass windows, antique furniture, stained woodwork, etc, which of course is not to everyone's taste. It's not 5-star luxury (it's a B&B after all), but makes up for that in every other respect. And no visitor could deny the memorable uniqueness of the property in these days when so many places are carbon copies of each other. Thoroughly recommended.

Hello!!

Thank you kindly for your review. It`s lovely to read your open opinion of the stay you had with us. We really enjoy the constant reference to George`s warm hospitality, and to the level of engagement he`ll share with you when you`re visiting.

We`ve actually just been on a journey through the South Island ourselves, and made a point of visiting other similarly themed B+B properties, and have been in awe of the efforts that other property owners have been to to ensure an exceptional accommodation offering. We agree that it`s nice to offer something a little different in a world where modern needs an alternate.

Thanks again, happy travels!!

The proprietor, George, made our stay in the convent outstanding. He made us feel at home right away. He had recommendations about activities, restaurants and hiking. There was tea, coffee and wine with biscuits in the lounge area and a balcony overlooking the property or picnic tables to enjoy it on. The rooms are full of vintage furnishings with updated bathrooms. Breakfast in the morning was delicious! The place is on the outskirts of town, so it is peaceful retreat.

Hello!!

Thank you for taking time to share your experience with everyone, it`s very much appreciated.

George is wonderful isn`t he? His extraordinary personality and warmth when welcoming you is genuine, and filters down to all who work here. It`s an amazing atmosphere, and so happy that you`ve been here to experience this first hand.

We love to be able to assist with trip and activity planning, and make all bookings for our guests without any extra fees. We`re passionate about the Fiordland region, and our biggest satisfaction comes from being able to have you experience it for yourself with our guidance. We have really close relationships with all of the activity and tour operators here, and can guarantee lifetime memories as these people share our enthusiasm.

You`re so right about this being a calming place!! The whole of Te Anau is like this we think - there are no demands on your soul here. You can relax without the world needing anything of you - it`s an incredible feeling!!

Great to hear from you, sending you our best wishes :-)

Staying in the belfry sounded interesting, especially when it was a delightful, comfortable room instead of a bell tower. The moved, restored convent provided excellent accommodations with beautiful woodwork, stained glass windows, and comfortable furnishings. George and his staff welcomed us warmly and helped with recommendations for nearby restaurants and sightseeing. Breakfast was delicious and filling to support us during our touring. Afternoon tea and evening wine added to ambience and comfort. The quiet location is convenient to all nearby activities.

Room Tip: The Belfry is a large, comfortable room, a "upgrade" from some of the others.

Marvellous place to stay - we stayed 3 nights. The building used to be an old Convent. George so welcomimg and could not do enough to ensure the comfort of his guests. Delicious afternoon tea each day. Huge garden to wander around. Very quiet location on the outskirts of town. Handy base for doing Milford Sound.

Hello!!

So glad you enjoyed your stay with us, it`s really nice to hear you appreciate the large grounds and location in town as we do. There`s something special about feeling like you`re staying in a park, yet only minutes walking from town.

George is great isn`t he? I can say that this attention to others, and the bond you would have felt with him during your stay is truly his way with all people - during, and after work. This charisma carries through to all staff, and the delightful working atmosphere at Te Anau Lodge is testament to his guiding light.

Thank you for your review - it`s very much appreciated :-)

I was booked into the YHA in Te Anau while my family had booked into Te Anau lodge. Needless to say the YHA did not compare to Te Anau Lodge and when George heard my predicament he came to my rescue and found me a room. George and his staff could not have been friendlier and nothing was too much trouble for them. An excellent bed and breakfast.

We were lucky enough to stay in this glorious old convent on our way round South Island. George and his lovely staff made us so very welcome and we had a great room with a very comfortable bed and views across the huge lawns towards the lake. Nothing that we might have needed had been omitted and we loved the fun and laughter that we had with George (of course) and his staff who were so kind. Tea and coffee were always on hand for us to help ourselves in the sitting room and oh yes - that chocolate cake. Oh Yum! We spent a really really special two nights here and wished so much that we could have stayed longer. Another time most certainly. Thank you to you all.
