“Comfortable spot - quiet but close to the town centre”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 March 2011

A very reasonably priced and clean motel set back from a quiet street in the centre of town. Very easy walking distance to all amenities of the town and the lake. Courteous staff and plenty of parking. We found Te Anau to be a pleasant town in its own right despite being described in some guide books as merely a service town for Milford Sound.

We booked a studio unit for a 1 night stay & were very pleased with our choice.

We arrived mid afternoon & did not incur any check in problems. As we were leaving @ 7am the next day, we paid on arrival & were told just to leave the keys on the dining table.

The main room was spacious, but we thought (in our opinion) that the light fittings were a little old fashioned. The studio was clean, light, airy & tidy. The carpet was soft & practical. The TV had an integrated DVD player (don't know if these could be borrowed from reception), & there was a digital wall clock which also gave the date & room temperature. The main room had a wall heater (which looked like an air con unit). There was also a 2 seater sofa - great for resting & watching TV.

The kitchenette was well supplied with crockery etc.

The bathroom was a wet room. It lacked shelf space by the basin, but there was a large cupboard under the basin. It was nicely presented in blues, greys & white. The soap, shower gel & shampoo dispensers were nice: stylish pump bottles. The shower was powerful, & its drain is in a dip so water drained away from the rest of the bathroom OK. There was a nice mix of white & navy towels - soft & fresh-smelling.

We received a jug of milk on arrival & were shown to our room. We parked right outside. There were countless electric sockets throughout the studio.

No hairdryer was provided in the room, so I got one from reception - no problem.

It was very quiet at night: no sound from the building, area or town! We slept very well.

We walked across the park & had our evening meal at The Olive Tree in the main street. There are loads of places to chose from to eat & drink. The info bundle in the room was the most comprehensive that we had seen on our travels: full of info on the area, restaurants & bars, tours, tips for walking & just about everything.

A recommended place to stay.

Our arrival and departure were within normal hours, so we did not run into the issues others have reported. The room was clean and comfortable, and surprisingly quiet with so many other units around. You can easily walk to the lake and the main city center from the hotel.

I'm from the group that has the unpleasant experience. I have no complain about the accomodation etc. I understand how personal life is valued in the country. Our late check-in must cause inconvenience to the staff who prefers to do the check-in personally. At the end we are not charged with the discretionary late check-in fee.

Having said that, as tourists, I hope our constraints and difficulties can be understood. Display of courtesy and respect to customer upon arrival would be also appreciated. Being in the tourist business, I guess sometimes one may need to allow flexibility to cater the needs of different customers.

I'm not suggesting anyone not to stay in this property. If you decide to pick this motel, do yourself a favour, do the hotel staff a favour, ARRIVE IN OFFICE HOUR. You don't want the fun to be spoiled with motel matter, right?

We stayed in the Parklands Motel for 2 nights in November 2010. We didn’t spend much time in the room as we did the day trip to Milford Sound. The location was excellent, just a few minutes walk across the park to Te Anau (cafe doubled as a good chippy!), and a few minutes from the lake. The room was clean. The kitchen area had a microwave and fridge (no hob, though). The shower was OK. The TV signal was good, and there was a DVD player. The bed was OK, and there was space to hang clothes.

Like the rest of the reviewers, I had no problems with the location or the quality of the rooms. Your typical motel standard and pretty decent value for money. What completely ruined our stay was the downright shoddy attitude of the motel owner.

When we knew that we were going to be arriving late, I immediately phoned the motel at 12pm that day to say that we were planning to arrive at about 10pm. I typically do this as an act of courtesy since I know that small town motels tend not to have 24 hour reception. I expected that we would make some side trips along the way from Dunedin to Te Anau to view scenery and wildlife, taking advantage of the long daylight hours in the summer. While the drive itself could take 3 hours, I knew that we were going to need more time than that, since as tourists from Asia, how often do we get the chance to visit New Zealand?

What happened next was beyond my wildest imagination. Instead of thanking me, the owner proceeded to lambast me for failing to arrive by 8pm (reception closing time). The owner insisted that we had an obligation to arrive by 8pm, as if he was going to impose a curfew on his guests! When I suggested that he leave the keys in the rooms and just tell us the room number, he curtly said that the motel did not follow such a practice and that he checks in all his guests personally. He then grudgingly agreed to open the reception till 10pm.

I have no problem if the owner wants to check us in personally, but I don't see why his guests should be penalised or forced to check in by a certain time because of this. I have arrived way past reception hours at motels in Australia (New South Wales, Victoria and Canberra), in the US (California, Oregon, New York State, Pennsylvania) and later in the trip at Fox Glacier and Christchurch and none of them have any problem with their guests arriving late. All they appreciated was a quick phone call to inform them that a late arrival was expected. They would typically leave the key under the mat, or leave instructions for their guests at the reception door. Parklands Motel chooses not to do the very sensible thing that all motels practice around the world, for reasons that defy logic.

In the end, we arrived at 1am. I had called around 9.30pm at Invercargill to say that we would arrive only past midnight and to again politely suggest that he leave the keys in our rooms. I would have called earlier, but we had been in the Catlins which had slowed our travel considerably and we did not have any mobile phone reception there. The owner then took an aggressive tone and accused us of “breaking our obligation” and “stringing him along”. He said that we “could do better than that” and went as far as accusing us of lying about mobile phone reception! Moreover, he insisted that we drive as fast as we could from Invercargill to Te Anau, for his convenience, oblivious to (1) that we were tourists and not familiar with the local roads, (2) darkness was closing in, and (3) a rain storm was coming which made the roads wet and slippery. I of course chose to ignore his verbal insults, and just drove at a speed appropriate for the conditions. Better to arrive late but safe, than not to arrive at all! Quite obviously, this motel owner doesn’t even appreciate this basic principle, and puts his convenience ahead of his guests’ safety!

Finally, beware the tiny clause on the website which says: Late check-in after 8pm may incur a late payment fee unless advised. Have you ever heard of a place which charges its guests for late CHECK-IN? $50 was what the motel owner said he could have charged us for arriving late. I certainly won't be back at this motel if we visit Te Anau again. If you are in the hospitality business, you should always accommodate late arrivals from your guests; otherwise, don’t be in the business at all.

Stopped at TeAnau overnight to do a cruise on the sounds. The owner was a little rough around the edges and the room was basic but served our needs considering the price. All in all a reasonable stay, easy walk to town and services.
