“Grumpy reception”
Reviewed 20 April 2014

Taken to units by a grumpy welcome, had to clean the bedside cabinet which was sticky, dusty and had candlewax on it.
Beds very comfortable and separate communal kitchen area was clean and had everything that we required.Close to all attractions.

We stayed 2 nights at the Parklands in a 1 bedroom unit while we went up to Milford Sound.

The rooms were excellent and the bed very comfortable. The Motel is about 150m from the lake and 1 block from the main street through a nice park.

However the complex needs a touch of care to get into the brilliant bracket, from things like some clothes hooks on the back of the bathroom door, bitumen on the drive & parking (gets very noisy when vehicles move around) and either a refurb of the laundry or a lock on the door. IMHO the iron in the damp laundry is asking for a short circuit. While not a deal breaker, the TV is well out of date and when you toss the iron from the laundry, each unit should get an iron and ironing board.

Seems a negative review, but we enjoyed the stay, just want it improved.

We drove right past this place not realising it was our motel. It looked very tired and a bit unkept from the outside but to the owners credit our room was very large, clean and comfortable. We didn't receive the warm enthusiastic greeting we had received in most other motels in New Zealand so our first impressions were not the best. The best word to describe this place is adequate. Nothing wrong with the room but nothing special either. Good proximity to the centre of town.

Had a comfortable stay in the motel for the three of us. One thing we really liked was the spacious shared kitchen. The room was well furnished and beds were comfy. Good value for money and good location from the lake.

The room was clean and we had enough space. Clean bathroom, with champoo and soap.
De biggest plus for me was the kitchen. Everything was clean and well taken care off.
We had a room at the back of the motel so no noise from the street. Slept like a baby!

No one goes to Te Anau to sit in the room. The room was of ample size, an older but not unkempt facility, the shared kitchen was a bit awkward (hoping for refrigerator room and a free toaster) and the parking was so close to the living space it could be disruptive. Having said that there appears to be little variation between this centrally located facility and a dozen other choices all of which were a bit more pricey. Te Anau is a cool, quiet town on a picturesque lake and a great home base for the incomparable marvels of Doubtful Sound and Milford Sound. Its not fancy, but its not pricey, it sure beats camping and its a sound choice.

Room Tip: If you have a choice get a room in the back...but not adjacent to laundry/kitchen rooms.

Bit of a mixed review. On the positive side, the owners let us keep our car on the property while we walked the Milford Track and our food in the fridge. This was very nice. Also, our rooms (two visits) were very nice and clean. The second one (No. 8 was quite cramped). The kitchen is large, clean and well-equipped and there is a laundry which is handy after you've been tramping for 4 days. But one of the rooms that our friend stayed in really smelled badly and the owners blamed it on "the Asians cooking". We didn't appreciate this racist slur at all and anyway the smell was nothing like wonderful aromatic cooking smells but more like mouldy, damp covered with air freshener! When we asked for a check out extension from 10:00 to 12:00 noon, we were only given till 11:00 and then the owner was waiting outside the door anticipating our imminent departure. This is not good for a vacation-type location especially after 6 of us had occupied three rooms on two separate occasions. The cost was NZ$115/night for 2.

Room Tip: Choose one of the rear rooms - numbers 24-26 which are larger, quiet and close to kitchen.
