We were delighted with our stay at Shakespeare House. Its a motel style bed and breakfast, but Ray the host made you feel so welcome and relaxed that you felt like you were at home. The breakfasts are delicious and the rooms are very clean. Look forward to my next visit.

I was a little reluctant to book at Shakespeare House, as they had the lowest ranking of all the B&Bs in Te Anau at the time of my booking, but I thought that 3.5 out of 5 wasn't all that bad for some place that was much cheaper than the other B&Bs in town. I was impressed by the Shakespeare House; the hosts Ray, Kylie, and Margaret were very friendly; the rooms were clean and comfortable. Breakfast was great - a typical New Zealand breakfast, but there was always lots of food, including choices of eggs, and great fruit that had been home-canned previously. The B&B is located two blocks from the town centre, and while there are no views from the B&B, there were lots of birds, and it was really easy to get to town (we always went by foot even though we had a car). I would recommend Shakespeare House as a great value to anyone staying in Te Anau.

On its website, Shakespeare House is seen as a white-washed bungalow surrounded by flowers and indeed, this is exactly what you will see when you first turn into the drive. Realisation soon strikes however, when it becomes clear that the bungalow houses the dining room and laudry facilities only. To get to the accommodation, guests enter a building made of corrugated iron. The hallway is a cold, draughtly and unwelcoming corridor. It was cold and raining when we stayed, resulting in condensation streaming down the walls. We could hear the rain falling on the corrugated roof through the night. The en-suite was uncomfortable and awkwardly laid-out. Another problem was that we could clearly hear other guests using their bathroom - not very nice. Ray is a friendly, helpful and nice chap with a ready smile and makes a good breakfast. We only saw his wife once at 11am one day, sitting in the office in her dressing gown and with her hair uncombed - she didn't even raise her head to look at us, never mind respond to our "good morning". Shakespeare House is very clean and although it is not the cheapest B&B we stayed at, it is not at all expensive.

We spent two days in Te Anau and Milford Sound. The care we received from Ray and Kylie was excellent - great cooking and care when we were in trouble. Ray even lent us money for the internet without question.

The surroundings were very motel like rather than b and b. The labeling of the rooms was a little twee.

We spent 2 nights at the Shakespeare. There were 4 of us. Stayed in the family unit with kitchenette. Great value for the price. We received a warm welcome, rooms were comfortable, and the breakfast menu was excellent. Thank you Ray and Margaret for making our stay at your B&B a memorable one.

My wife and I spent a couple of nights here on our way to/from Milford Sound during our recent trip round NZ. The layout of the place is more like a motel than a b&b but we received a warm welcome, had two good nights' sleep and excellent cooked to order breakfasts for a price which was the lowest we paid in b&bs throughout our entire trip.

The Shakespeare theme is a bit overemphasised (rooms named after characters from his plays and quotes on the walls if the dining room). It is located a good 10 mins walk (but very pleasant along the lakeside) from the centre of Te Anau where there is a good selection of places to dine in the evening - also the last place to fill up with fuel before the drive to Milford !

In Te Anau a trip across the lake to see the glowworm caves is definiteltyto be recommended. We went on the last boat of the day and apart from the amazing sight of the fluorescent insects in the caves the return starlight journey under the Southern Cross was magnificent.
