My friend and I were passing through town and stayed 2 nights here. Very clean rooms, great facilities (2 kitchens) plus an awesome TV room with free movies on VHS all next to a cozy fire! The manager/owner Ray was always helpful, oh, and there's free WIFI <--always a plus! Lots of space to spread out and chill or catch up on the internet. Also, it's a nice location if you want to drive to Murchinson or Charleston for other activities (rafting, caving). Highly recommend!

The hostel has a really nice atmosphere, like you are in someone's house. The staff were very useful (even filleting the fish we had caught so it was ready to eat after our surfing lesson!) Have a log fire, TV room and free WiFi too!

Stayed 2 nights and wish it could've been more. We came to explore the local historical mining areas and the host was amazingly informative in helping us know the best trails and sights to visit. Plenty of public space and 2 kitchens meant it never felt crowded and even though it was quite full we were never bothered by noise. Every thing was tidy and clean and we were provided with plenty of extra blankets, which we didn't need because the room heater was perfectly adequate. The outside lounge areas looked like lots of fun with hammocks and BBQ facilities but as it was typical West Coast weather we spent most our leisure time cuddled by the roaring coal fire. Town amenities (grocery store, resturants, etc) are all within an easy walking distance. Will stay again if given the chance.

Room Tip: host gave us a choice of several rooms and all had different plusses and minuses so ask to see your...

Stayed here for one night which just happened to come with a massive storm, so I was glad that I was here as there's so much to do without leaving the hostel. They have pretty much a living room with sofas, a TV and a fire..lots of board games, DVDs and videos to choose from too. Really homely place, nice kitchen and dining room, and garden area, if only the weather had been a bit nicer we could've relaxed outside in the hammocks.
Beds were really comfortable and provided with lots of warm blankets, not very much floor space at all though.
Showers were in stalls with wooden panelled doors which made it look like a barn, not great lighting in the stalls either, but shower was really hot and powerful!!
In our stay we also got given 2 hours free wifi!!!! The staff here are also really knowledgeable about what to do in Westport, there are posters and boards all over the walls with loads of activities!

I stayed at Bazil's during a KiwiExperience trip. Our room, "The Unit", was brilliant; 10 bunk beds, toilet, kitchen, dining table, sofa, tv and video recorder (and movies) plus a wood burner! I've stayed at more slick and modern hostels, but this was definitely the most comfortable and cozy place I have stayed at during this trip. The guy at reception was very friendly and helpful (but aren't all Kiwis?) and, despite the awful weather, took a number of us for a surfing lesson at Tauranga Beach. Recommended, especially if you want a few chilled days and get some surfing or bodyboarding in.

Room Tip: The Unit is brilliant (see review above)!

It isn't much to look at on the outside but inside it's cozy and warm on a cold and wet spring day. Really nice people and the beds were fine. Bathroom area is a little weird being basically in the middle of a hall way but it gets the job done. Only real negative is the smell of burning coal that they use to heat something, presumably the laundry water? Only an issue if you open your window and the wind is just so. Really not anything to worry about. Would stay again when back in Westport.

This place is like staying at a friend's house with all of your friends in the same room. It's warm inside where the fireplace is and the rooms never got cold.

I shared a three bunk bed room and it did have enough room for us and our bags. The beds weren't particularly comfy but there were two duvets on the beds so that made it nice and warm. There was a surge protector outlet in our room so that gave almost everyone an outlet to use for the night.

The toilets and the showers were in a central location near the kitchen and while there were a lot of people sharing the facilities, we didn't have issues of waiting for your turn or so. I will say that I wish the shower area was more separated so that you had a place to put your dry clothes so that they didn't get wet as you showered.

This hostel is directly across from a park so that you can run and play and behind the main road in Westport so you can drink and play on that street. It's a short run to the river's mouth and the town is easy to navigate.

The kitchen was probably the best stocked kitchen I've seen on my trip. There were plenty of spices and it was like cooking at home.

I used the laundry facilities here and while they were a little pricey, they cleaned and dried my clothes well and within a short period of time.

I don't think I would stay here again but not because of the place, mainly because I wouldn't be in Westport again. Nice place to stay though and a great host also.
