“Loved Rough and Tumble”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 June 2007

We booked into Rough and Tumble Lodge for only two nights - if we knew how wonderful it was going to be we should have booked for longer.
The lodge is situated in a paradise of native bush, with mountains and rivers right at the door. Truly a piece of heaven we were fortunate enough to enjoy.
Our stay was very relaxing, with gentle bush walks. If our young children were not with us we would have attempted some of the more challenging hikes in the area or the river rafting - will have to return for these and the fabulous trought fishing (which is right at the front door).
Rough and Tumble Lodge is a wonderful looking lodge, blending in with the environment superbly. It is very well appointed, comfortable beds, and room for 4 in a unit - with 2 downstairs and 2 upstairs on the mezanine floor. Delightful to go to sleep looking out the large window at the gorgeous southern hemisphere starlit sky.
Our hosts were very friendly, welcoming and accommodating to our wishes and needs (with a young baby we were probably more demanding than other guests). We enjoyed delicious meals - Susan is an excellent cook.
We had a truly relaxing and rejuvenating time and will definitely return in the future.

There is no doubt in my mind that New Zealand's West Coast is one of the most spectacular places on earth. I am equally certain that those planning a visit could not wish for a better place to stay than the Rough and Tumble Bush Lodge. Surrounded on three sides by magnificent native forest, and looking out over the white-water of the Mokihinui River, the R&T is the perfect place to get away from it all.

And get away was what my friends and I did for 5 glorious days last month. When the sun shone we explored the environs in a series of spectacular bush-walks. When the rain (inevitably) came we curled up on couches in the main lodge, read books, drank wine, toasted marshmallows over the open fire and watched the river rage by. No less conducive to total relaxation were our beautiful timber rooms, all of which looked out into (and indeed almost seemed part of) the forest, and which possessed beds so comfortable it was a miracle we got up at all. As there was a group of us, we were able to choose the self-catering option offered by the R&T, but if the one meal cooked for us by our hosts is anything to go by, those opting to have all meals provided are in for a culinary treat.

And the negatives? Well, to my mind there is only one, the ubiquitous West Coast sandflies. Thankfully, at the R&T the lodge and all rooms are well protected by insect screens, and complimentary repellent is always at hand.

Finally, lest you think my praise of the R&T is exaggerated, I can offer no greater proof of my sincerity than this: in December my partner and I are returning to New Zealand from the UK and plan to get married. The venue? The Rough and Tumble Bush Lodge.
