Description: Housed in the distinctive Art Deco ‘Waterside Workers Union Hall’ The Town House (formally The Bay House) is a ‘must do’ on your coastal itinerary. Reminiscent of a European café The Town House is the ‘go to’ place whatever you’re dining needs, whether it be a meal at anytime during the day or evening, a coffee and croissant in the morning, an afternoon wine or cocktail or a late evening drink and dessert. This is the place where you will find the locals sipping espresso at the bar on a Saturday morning reading the paper while others dine in the restaurant and enjoy the a la carte menu on offer. Located towards the port end of town near the picturesque fishing wharf on the corner of Palmerston and Cobden Streets, The Town House’ cosy interior is in keeping with its art deco history featuring original wooden floors, be-spoke wallpaper and wood paneled walls throughout with a deco sunburst theme behind the bar, the freestanding fireplace and in the original art deco glass and rimu doors that lead to the north facing terrace. The dining room is cosy despite its open design and high ceilings. The room warms up as it fills up with diners and comes alive with the enjoyable buzz of dinner conversations and as the warm weather comes to an end a spot by the fireplace is desirable and will see you settle in for a very comfortable dining experience. The Terrace has seating for 40 diners and on a sunny day is the best spot in town for alfresco wining and dining.

“Very good, but could be better.”
Reviewed 17 May 2014

We were in Westport on the night of our 10th Wedding Anniversary (travelling south island in motorhome), so we booked the table a few months ahead of our trip. On arriving in Westport, we went to have a look at the venue and menu. Only one fish dish on the menu, but the staff couldn't tell us what that was, as it hadn't been delivered yet - fine no problem, it's going to be fresh, I can find out later. The staff congratulated us on our anniversary which I thought was very good that they had made a point of noting this fact. We returned later that evening and had a pre-dinner drink in the bar. The waitress took our order and then delivered us our starters to the bar (not what we had booked) and without cutlery, a particular pet hate of mine! We asked to be moved to the restaurant and she duly obliged. The food was good, very good, but not one fish or vegetarian option on the menu and no side orders of vegetables available either. The service was slow, mainly because there was only one waitress for a fairly busy evening. I would go back, but would like to see more staff on the floor and some fish on the menu.

We enjoyed a stunning lunch at the town house recently. It must be the jewel in Westport's crown. These people can cook!

“Great food but too long to get it”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

My wife and I recently ate at this restaurant on a visit to Westport which we picked by its nice menu on display on its doors. The setting of an old renovated trade union hall is magic, cosy and welcoming.

The sole waitress was welcoming and new from memory all the dishes and specials of the day. She was not run off her feet (Tuesday night) as there were only 3 other couples in at that point. After a reasonable wait to order our entree came after 45 minutes after walking in the door and our mains came after another 45 minutes. We were not in a hurry but even that time delay tested my patience. The food was very nice eg. my steak was cooked exactly how I like it-medium and the general presentation was pleasing and inviting.

The total price was reasonable but the time to wait for the meals was far too long especially given the small number of diners.

“Potential!”
Reviewed 11 May 2014

This restaurant has great potential , a thoughtfully and nicely refurbished venue in an art deco style .We enjoyed beautiful fresh and nicely balanced and presented entrees ( goat cheese and onion marmalade tart and homemade breads ) excellent. However the recommended " special" for the evening of roast pork belly with Yorkshire pudding was heavily salted to the point of almost inedible and the doughy soggy pudding a disappointment . Our waitress missed the opportunity to rectify this when she cleared the 2 barely touched plates .

“Lovely meal, good service”
Reviewed 11 May 2014

My partner and I dined here for lunch.
The meal was nice and reasonalby priced, i had the soup, partner had the breakfast.
Service was good but thought the staff were not dressed appropriably, our waitress was hearing a short skirt and jandles, not great for hospitality industry.
Would reccommend for lunch.
