I'm an Aussie, born and bred and to say I like my 'sport' is a massive understatement. So where else would a self-respecting motorsport tragic be the first weekend of October, each and every year? Mount Panorama, Bathurst, naturally.
So, after treatment for cancer, I wasn't really up to camping on the mountain and a girlfriend kindly offered to share her motel room with me.
So, being an "event" weekend I was expecting a (modest) surcharge on the room rate, which for the 50th Anniversary of the great race in 2012 translates to $280.00 per night ... for a room, the size of a glorified shoebox!!
So much for $75.00-$95.00 per night ... the owner's justification for this massive price-gouge ... "it keeps the riff raff out" ... and this is how the Bathurst Explorers Motels treats returning customers each and every year ... so much for loyalty.
I'm sure most of the accommodation near Mount Panorama do likewise, but surely they should be FORCED to advertise the fact that during certain periods of the year they will charge like wounded bulls ... because if you're not going to pay their ridiculous rates, some other sucker will.
