“A great guided tour to be enjoyed by all who love great caves and the history of Bushrangers.”
Reviewed 5 January 2012

As a group of 7 keen tourists set on exploring some of the great Central Plains area of New South Wales we were looking to escape the heat of a hot summer's day and headed an hour out of Bathurst to Abercrombie Caves. There are several tours to choose from and we chose to go on the guided tour of the Bushrangers' Cave and we were all so pleased we did. Our ticket allowed us to tour the Archway Cave as well, although this part of the tour was self-guided. The Bushrangers Cave was a maze of passages and is named after it become the final hideout of the infamous Ribbon Gang boys. Our tour leader, Barry, was an excellent historian and told us great details of not only of the local bushrangers that frequented the area in the 1800's but also of skeletons of long-extinct animals found buried deep under the earth in the caves, some of which carbon-dating could not go back far enough to give an accurate date of the bones found. There was about 20 people on the tour and we were all given time to explore, ask questions and really enjoy our time. At no time was any of the going difficult although there were steps to negotiate, rocks to scramble around and a few narrow tunnels to squeeze through, there were no problems for any of us and is well lit throughout. In the Archway section we were delighted to be able to pace ourselves and revel in the beauty of the limestone stalagmites and stalactites. Points pf interest were well signed along the way. The Archway is Abercrombie's most famous feature and includes the historic Gold miners dance platform which was built in 1880. We even had the chance to do a quick foxtrot on the dance floor which was just lovely. The dance platform is the original one built by the miners in the area and it is still used for weddings, opera singing, and even Barry was married there.

After our tour we headed back to the ticket office where we purchased teas, coffees and ice creams and a thoroughly great time was had by all. We look forward to a return visit to complete another one of the cave tours on offer.

“Surprisingly good”
Reviewed 8 December 2011

Going on the first weekend of summer, on a Saturday afternoon, it was surprisingly quiet! Not that we were complaining, as we pretty much had the Archway Cave all to ourselves, for the self-guided tour. Perfect for us photographers, with no distractions, or people wandering into our shots!

Explore the cave at your own pace - and the automatic lighting system will light the way and surprise you as you venture along and learn about the geological history.

Note: driving in from Goulburn, there are several stretches of unsealed road. But worth the effort to get there!
