“Surprisingly Good! Loved the Brazillian BBQ”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 March 2011

We decided to stay in Newcastle overnight (relatively last moment) and there appeared to be limited availability with hotels. We (rather reluctantly) booked the Gateway Inn but it was lovely - brand new, clean, modern and really catered for our needs - a good restaurant and a cheap bar open late!

We generally stay in top hotels and I thought the room was very comparable - looked clean, crisp & modern and had an amazing bathroom. We stopped for a few drinks in the bar upstairs which, again, is modern and quite funky and decided to try the Brazillian BBQ, which was great!

There is a Leagues club next door which is handy for a few cheap beers but also where brekkie is served & where the leisure facilities are.

We really enjoyed it there so booked a 2nd night - upgraded to a Suite but basically the only difference was a spa bath.

The only downsides for us were location (you cant just walk into Newcastle) and the food at the Leagues club was pretty poor.

Stayed one night in a deluxe room - the room was perfect size, all modern furnishings - LCD TV, king size bed plus day bed by the window. Bathroom was great - no bath but a wonderful double head shower.

The hotel is adjecent to the leagues club and you can charge all meals/drinks back to your room which was very handy. Service was what i expected - one night cost $155 without breakfast - Great value in my opinion.

Hi, I had planned a romantic weekend @ The Gateway Inn as we just love dining at their brazilian restaurant and sipping on a few cocktails @ the cocktail bar :)......however I have to report that I was very disappointed with the accommodation. I had booked a room with verandah that has the jacuzzi. The champagne and chocolates were a gorgeous treat on our arrival, when we went to slip into the jacuzzi it was very cool (we were staying here over winter) and we could not sit in it as we were litterly shivering. I contacted reception only to be advised that I only had control of the on and off switch....mmmm (not very happy as we could not use the jacuzzi). We thought that we would watch a movie..(great movie) however I did not take to much notice of the price of movies as they are generally around the same price as foxtel movies.....ouch no! The movie price was $15.00 (beware). We did however have a lovely breakfast the next morning...I would have to end this by saying that my $400.00 night was very disappointing :(

I really enjoyed my stay here. The rooms were immaculate and the bed was fantastic. My favourite part of my whole stay was the bathroom! The room I was in had a double headed shower and it was amazing! The bathroom was also impeccably clean and new looking. The only slight downside was the room service dinner at night wasn't overly fantastic, I wouldn't recommend the asian tasting plate(it's obviously from a bain marie not freshly cooked) but the breakfast was pretty good. I will definately be coming back.

Went there for a wedding, rooms booked 2 months in advance, their policy is 2pm check in, but "early check in" can be requested. Rang hotel at 10am to check if room would be available by 12, rude reception girl said yes and that the room was already vacant, arived at 12:30 and was told by same reception girl that rooms would not be ready til 2pm, groom and guests were left to hang around front of hotel til rooms were ready, most of the party were late getting to wedding. Staff all very rude, didnt seem to be sympathetic about times etc. On return from wedding, hotel was blacked out due to the heat, when asked what will happen if the hotel was still in black out by the time the reception was scheduled to start, hotel staff said it would just be "Bad luck". Power eventually came back on but air cond in club didnt seem to be working again. Will never stay here again. Rude Rude Rude! Apart from the service, the rooms are very nice.

Having stayed at this new hotel several times now, I have come armed to this review with a pros and cons list as per below. We usually book a one bedroom apartment - the hotel has many types of room choices (to the point of confusion when trying to book!)

PROS:
- New!
- Good furniture with King sized beds, clean and modern furnishings and a nice window seat.
- Restaurant on the top level of the hotel is fantastic. It's offers traditional Brazilian food as well as a standard menu and has a groovy cocktail bar. Servings are huge and I would recommend trying the Brazilian set menu.
- Cost. There are often cheap deals going (well under $200 per night). There are also deals that tie in with the restaurant and look to be good value.
- Access to the gym and pool at the adjoining Leagues Club
- Free parking in a secure car park.

CONS:
- Website: the hotel's website is a one page affair and you can only make reservations via email or by phoning the hotel. You're better to check wotif for room configurations and pricing.
- Staff: the staff can be either really good (we've had some excellent service), or really indifferent with a sloppy attitude.
- Vibe: the hotel is not really run like a hotel. It's part of a Leagues Club complex and you get the feeling that it's run as an add-on to this, not as a hotel business. It's popular with people attending weddings in the Leagues Club.
- Noise: while noise from the main road (Industrial Drive) is not an issue, there are several busy roads within the complex (for patrons to get to the Club) which have these huge stormwater grates which clang and rattle every time they're driven over. We mentioned this to a staff member and apparently complaints about the noise are common, yet they say there's nothing they can do about it! Considering the Leagues Club owns the roads within the complex, you'd think this would be easy to rectify. We always ask for a room at the front of the hotel, rather than the back.
- Location: It's about a 5-10 minute drive to the Honeysuckle Wharf area and slightly further to Newcastle centre.

All-in-all I would recommend this hotel if you want somewhere to crash in comfy surrounds. If you want somewhere more central with good customer service, I'd stay elsewhere.

Ideally, I'd give the Gateway Inn 3.5 stars if I could.
