There are so many good cafés in Newcastle these days that one can blend into another. Three monkeys stands out though for its setting. The interior looks to have been maintained in its original state for many years with thick wooden floors, wooden staircases, panelling and picture rails on the walls with rustic type furniture to match. Now, I don't drink coffee but my friends assure me this place has some of the best in Newcastle. I've had a few breakfasts here which have always been very nice. We like sitting upstairs where there is a small balcony. Parking in Darby street can be a challenge but worth a stop for the food, setting and friendly service.

Thank Stephen C

Always very impressed by the service by all the girls. And the food is always delicious. However, on my most recent visit, was very disappointed by the observed attitude of one of the waitors. Apparently he was the manager (?Mick) who spent most of the time either watching himself in the mirror and occassionaly being curt and short with the other staff. If it wasnt for this, all of the ratings would be much higher!

Great little spot for lunch, but food is overpriced for the meal you receive. Also located in a very tight space so you can hear everyone's conversations around you

The Three Monkeys comes across aesthetically as nothing too special on the Darby Street strip. The downstairs is quite a crush and the upstairs is aged and the floor there a bit undulating and uneven.
What the Three Monkeys has is the comfortable feel of an old kid leather glove. I began going for coffee there between work and early evening meetings. Eventually it was a late lunch, an occasional breakfast or a place to call in with relatives for lunch outdoors downstairs.
In school holidays, when in the city area for "kid stuff" with any of my five grandchildren, single or in a pair, it's the go to place.
Everyone of the co-owners and duty managers acknowledge our arrival. The children are spoken to like they're just as important. The waitresses and waiters communicate to children. (They obviously like kids as pics of their own and those of the staff adorn sections of the wall downstairs.)
The food is good, not too out of the ordinary, but it's one of those places that has a great feel. Little "oddities" or preferences with food, cakes, desserts for adults or children are "no trouble".
Warm, friendly, human and with that "part of the community" feel for customers who are more like valued guests.
If there are down moments in the ebb and flow of meeting customer needs, there'll be enquiries about job, life, travel, etc.
A "right fit" place!

Love this place.
Nice big meals for a good price :)
Staff are really polite.
Sit up stairs if you can, even try the balcony.
