“A tranquil, relaxing haven amid the vines”
Reviewed 16 December 2009

This was a return visit to the Carriages Country House after living overseas for the past four years and I was not disappointed. I had wonderful memories of drinking a glass of red by the fire in our room and relaxing over breakfast the next morning on the verandah, but this 2 day stay was in the heat of summer, so a whole new experience awaited.
We were not disappointed. We had driven up from Sydney in the morning, stopping for a long, leisurely lunch along the way and arriving at the Carriages in the heat of the afternoon. As we wound our way through the vines to the guesthouse itself, the long verandah and gabled roof came into view - a haven beckoning.
Opening the door to our upstairs gabled room, the cool air conditioning welcomed us and we knew we had found the respite we craved. The room and adjoining bathroom were both large and beautifully decorated with every comfort. The central fireplace would not be needed this visit, but created an ambience of country charm.
In the early evening when the temperature had cooled, we enjoyed a bottle of the Carriages wine and some cheese and crackers on our private balcony. Watching the setting sun listening only to the sound of cicadas is such a truly Australian experience and one that I had missed.
After a delicious breakfast the next day of fruit, yoghurt and home-cooked muffins we enjoyed a long walk followed by a swim in the pool. We then decided we did not want to leave this haven, even for the day, catching up on our reading and enjoying an afternoon nap in the heat of the day.
This Carriages Country House is a tranquil haven and I couldn't recommend it more highly as a place to recharge your batteries. The owners, Ben and Lise, were totally charming and are happy to meet every need. The wine we enjoyed on our first night had been grown from vines on the estate and was first rate, so we couldn't resist buying a case to take home.
All in all, the Carriages Country House is the perfect getaway winter or summer, and I am already looking for an opportunity to go back again!

Had a fabulous stay here on the weekend. From the moment we arrived everything was perfect - extremely welcoming owners, quaint and private setting, very comfortable room, all the facilities we needed, we loved the breakfast basket that was delivered to our door each morning!! And the location was ideal - right in the heart of Pokolbin!! Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing weekend away in the food and wine capital!

In response to the previous negative review: we were fortunate enough to book the property after failure to confirm by the previous reservation. From our perspective, when we emailed the management with an enquiry for this weekend we were told that the property was fully booked with the possible exception of one room for which the owners had received an invalid credit card number and no reply to several phone calls they had made in attempts to follow up the original booking. We were asked to wait for three more days during which the owners tried to confirm the original booking, after which we were first in line to book the presumed-free room. We had an extremely pleasant stay. The rooms were comfortable, the breakfast was generous, the property lovely, the owners professional and helpful. I would recommend this property to anybody.

This is a strange review to have to write but I feel compelled as I have never been treated with such poor customer service before. My partner and I never actually got the opportunity to stay at the carriages as they took the liberty of cancelling our booking without actually communicating with us in person or email.

We made the original booking over the internet six months prior for a wedding we were to attend and the dates and credit card details were all exchanged via email. For some reason I can't quite grasp they decided that they were going to do all the follow-up confirmation by phone on a number which they had never called me on before and I had in fact stopped using four months before. Not once did they send me an email to the address through which the original booking was made and when they had left what they thought was enough messages - on a number which never rang - they decided to cancel our booking which pretty much left us with out accommodation on an extremely busy weekend where we were due to attend a wedding.

When we called to confirm three days before we were due to arrive we were told that they had tried to call several times and left messages on voicemail on an old number (one which they had never even taken the time to confirm was okay to call) they had decided to cancel our booking. My partner was the one who called and the guesthouse staff member who spoke to him was extremely rude about it saying that they could have re-booked it fifty-five times and reciting all the dates on which they tried to call.

That night when I wrote an email to communicate my disappointment I received another very rude email about my telephone number being listed on the bottom of emails which were exchanged with the B&B over five months prior. This just proved to me that they do know actually how to use email and can even respond in real time - but it hadn't occurred to them to contact me via the medium which had already been established between us from the beginning before they cancelled the booking.

Rude, inconsistent and not up-to-date with the times. Who knows how people who are this inconsiderate would look after guests actually staying there?

We stayed for one night at The Carriages Country House in the verandah room. The room was exactly as it had been listed on the website we booked it on, a pretty corner room with a verandah over looking beautiful gardens. The house was quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed an evening on our verandah with wine and cheese. The breakfast in the morning was excellent, a basket with lots of yummy delights, more than enough for two people. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The house also has a really nice salt water pool. I would suggest this as a great place to stay if looking for some where in Pokolbin, even better that they allow you to book for one night.

my Husband and I have just returned from a long weekend in the Hunter Valley and a two night stay at The carriages Country House. We have nothing but praise for this beautiful property. We stayed in a Verandah suite, room 2. The rooms are rustically beautiful with wooden floors and furniture. There is an open fireplace and all firewood is replaced daily. We lit a fire every night we were there and it aided in the cosiness of the room. The queen bed was more than comfortable and came with a nice thick quilt to combat the nightly chill. There is also an air conditioner in the room which we didn't need to use. The bathroom was lovely and large with lots of hot water. Breakfast was supplied on both mornings and consisted of a basket left outside your door.Great pastries muffins and cereal. OJ and toast. We ate outside, sitting on the verandah enjoying the sunshine and listening to the birds. The verandah furniture is comfy with big cushioned chairs to relax and be at one with nature. Although the property was full, it was extremely quiet and peaceful and you could wander around and feel like you had the whole place to yourself. There is a pool and tennis court, but we were too busy drinking wine to make use of those. Roberts restaurant is a short walk away through the vineyard. There is not one negative that I could associate with this place. It was one of the most peaceful and relaxing weekends we have ever had, and we would definately return.

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Carriages Gatehouse this weekend and had an amazing time. We had the Gatehouse to ourselves for most of the weekend which meant that we had the beautiful fireplace roaring. We were also able to walk to the best winery and restaurant in the Hunter a couple of hundred meters away which was spectacular (Peppertree wines and Roberts restaurant)

We loved this beautiful property on the vineyards and enjoyed the delicious homemade blueberry muffins provided for breakfast. Highly enjoyable stay
