We stayed for the fourth time just before new year’s eve 2011, while visiting relatives. Have tried Rydges, but City Sands seems to have a great balance between independence and professionalism, not to mention space, exceptional outlook from the rooms overlooking the water and uncomplicated parking.

The City Sands website calls it 'luxury' but I wouldn't go that far, However, it is definitely a more upmarket style. All the rooms have at least one separate bedroom and nice loungeroom/dining/kitchenette, spacious bathroom. The décor is inoffensive and contemporary, the beds and pillows are comfortable and the sheets are soft. Shame the towels seem to be getting a little thin. The shower is a telephone style, it has great pressure, but would like a wider showerhead. And they have a shelf for soap & shampoos (you don’t have to put the bottles on the floor!). The kitchen is basic with bare essentials. There is a TV in the bedroom and the loungeroom, and a stereo, but no DVD player. A guest laundry is available but we have never used it. A balcony runs the length of the unit, and there are floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors in both rooms, with fly screens. The curtains block the light reasonably well – it’s pitch black at night, but they can’t block the morning sun in the east-facing rooms. On our last morning the room warmed up very early because of the direct sun.

As others have mentioned, the golf club is on the floors below and we find it serves very nice food, has a huge balcony to enjoy summer evenings and drink prices are reasonable. You can charge back to your room.

Because it’s a club, the desk is not manned all night. If you plan on arriving late you should make check-in arrangements before-hand. If you return late, there is a night entrance for you. We don’t expect 5-star front-desk service, but have never been let down. Also, because it’s a smaller hotel, there are no big queues. Coming & going is easy and uncomplicated. As mentioned by others, there is a credit card surcharge, but not for debit cards.

Probably the best part is the quiet. Because of the way the rooms are laid out we find it very quiet. Bedrooms are away from the hallway and share a wall with next door’s loungeroom. Have never heard any noise from the club below nor the golfers.

We have always found the cheapest rates on the Best Western website.

Room Tip: If you can afford an oceanview you won't be disappointed.

Good place to stay in Wollongong. Easy walk to city restaurants, shops and beach. Golf club is in the same building and a great place to eat. wonderful views over the golf course to the beach. We sat on the veranda and watched a couple of whales breaching.

Room Tip: Go for the golf course view

My husband and I had a short week day break at the City Sands - our first visit there. We checked in on Tuesday, 18 October 2011 and reluctantly left Thursday, 20 October 2011. It was a spur of the moment decision to get away so we were both surprised to be right on the golf-course, right near the beach and right near the city centre. Everyone made us so welcome. We had a wonderful one bedroom apartment with a balcony overlooking the mountains not the ocean. Some road noise but it was not discomforting. While an ocean view would have been pleasant, we had no complaints. It is great to have a small apartment with a kitchenette for those wanting to keep costs down. We loved wandering around and seeing some of Wollongong on foot. Great central location yet quiet. Highly recommend it to anyone. We will definitely be back.

Room Tip: Ocean side probably quieter than the mountain view side as that side faces the road. But the road n...

This is the 3rd time I have stayed at City Sands - our friends have an annual get together in Wollongong. Great location and view from ocean view rooms. We were lucky enough to have a very friendly and helpful staff member on check in Fri 26 Aug 2011 and check out Sun 28 Aug 2011 - think her name was Natalie !?? She even made the trip up to 3rd floor with a replacement electric jug and we were at fault - had not put our card in to trigger the electricity !!! Five stars go to her efficient and very pleasant service - she used to be a Chef so was also able to give us helpful cooking advice.
If you play golf , want to watch St George Illawarra Dragons at WIN Stadium or any of the acts at the Win Entertainment Centre - City Sands is an easy walk . Also easy walk to restaurants, clubs and Crown Central shops not to mention the beach, harbour and lovely walking or cycling track.

Room Tip: Choose Ocean View room and higher floor

My friend and I stayed here to go to the entertainment centre and found it to be handy to the centre and walking distance to beach and shopping centre also the win stadium.
The room was large and clean we stayed on the western side and found it very quiet but the views from the eastern side are fantastic but you will have to put up with early morning golfers.
It is a great place to stay if you are looking for something central. I would definately stay here again.

Stayed 3 nights. Front desk efficient, view over golf course to the sea very pleasant. Room looks a bit dated, but good spa bath. Don't get near the lift, too noisy. I was top floor in the middle and quiet. Walk into CBD or Beach cafes is a good 15min. They charge 2% on c/card + $50 per day security deposit in case you run up a tab at the Bistro/Bar (!). Bistro food not cheap and bit dull. But to have a drink and overlook the gold course is nice.

Stayed for 2 nights at Best Western City Sands on business in the area during June. This place is basically the golf club 19th hole. Unfortunately, didn’t get to play the course so can’t comment on the golf.

When checking in the reception seemed a little odd as we were welcomed in and checked in by the security staff. No actual receptionist appeared to exist. Nothing wrong with the service (in fact better than the receptionist in the morning) but just a bit off putting. Gives the impression that times are hard or they have significant security issues.

Stayed in a regular no frills room and on the wrong side of the hotel so no views over the course or the ocean. No doubt this would make a huge difference to your experience if you were here for the golf or holidaying. But being here for business during the shortest days of the year this didn’t make too much of an impact.

The room itself was efficient. A kitchenette if you needed it but no mini bar if you are used to one. Large enough room space but annoyingly where the work space has been set up there are no easily accessible power points - my battery pack made it across the room to the opposite wall but became a trip hazard getting to the balcony door - strange! TVs with Foxtel in lounge and bedroom area although TV in bedroom was a dinosaur.

Bathroom appeared to have been recently refurbished and was clean and well presented although the water pressure from the shower seemed to have taken the environmental factor just a bit too far.

The bistro area seemed to be lightly frequented whilst I was there but for the days of the week this was not surprising. I did not eat at the bistro but people who had gave it an “OK” rating with "typical bistro food" type comments. There is an outdoor area with great views but too cold at this time of year. In the summer this would be excellent. There is also a bar, tab and gaming area - typical of a golf club 19th hole. The bar staff do get a round of applause as they were friendly and happy to have a chat whilst providing good service.

So would I stay here again. Yes I think I would although I would stay on the view side of the hotel. Is it a great hotel? Not quite. A professional reception area at all times would make it feel more like a proper hotel and I am afraid the workspace not having accessible plugs let this place down just a bit.

Room Tip: Pay a little extra and get the view
