This was once the premier hotel on Glenelg seafront. Our first visit thirteen years ago was great, the rooms were already looking a little tired, however. Now, they are downright old fashioned. They are clean, but elderly fixtures and fittings mean that the reputation of this hotel has gone down. Anyone booking on the strength of the Stamford name may be disappointed. There are cheap deals however - a city view is very dull and disappointing but the rooms at the front are directly overlooking the sea and those with a balcony go some way to making up for the tired decor. The bar downstairs is excessively noisy and also contributes to the dumbing down of this hotel. The restaurant is open for breakfast which is excellent.

This restaurant prides themself on their high tea. It is advertised everywhere and with three different options, you would think they would know what they are doing. I personally don't think it's all that hard to put a nice high tea together! The first thing that put me off was that we were not even given a pot of tea. They gave you a cup only of pre-made tea which looked more like coloured water than actual tea. I will say that they quickly brought me a tea bag when I commented on the weakness of the tea. I'm sorry but this is a real no-no and what high tea is all about - having it in a nice pot! We chose the medium range high tea at $35 pp which came with freshly baked quiches and their singature curry puffs. Both very nice. Sandwiches were a real let down. Salmon ones were on wholemeal bread which was so dense and dry (obviously 2 day old bread). The other 2 varieties were very boring with the same lettuce mix on all 3 types of sandwiches. 3 types of sweets all nice (choc mouse, strawberry mouse cake and mini fruit tart). Scones (which again is what high tea is all about) were also a let down. There were 6 small dense scones with most of them having these black marks on the bottom - obviously something got worked in the dough but it did not look very pleasant. 2 nice fluffy scones would have been better than what they served up. Remember most prefer quality not quantity. The other anoying thing was, with a whole empty restaurant they had to seat us right next to a large group. Really! didn't do much for the experience. End result, would I go back or recommend - sorry but no.

Dined there recently and was disappointed with the food, which meant that no matter how good the service was (it was fine) it meant little.

We chose the "Three Tier Tapas Tower" for two which left a lot to desire. It was more spin over substance and in reality, was simply not worth the price. The bottom tier was Octopus (chewy), Olives, Mushrooms and Chorizo, The next level was the "mini burger" (tastless), Salt and Pepper Squid (good), Oysters Kilpatrick (OK) and Tempura Prawns (good), and the next level had 4 King Prawns (OK).

Overall - unimpressed.

By the way, this restaurant will add 2.5% if you want to pay with Credit Card.
