Description: “Tasmanian Beef Specialist” Located in the historic art deco Luck’s Butchery shop in Launceston, Tasmania, Black Cow showcases grass fed, free range, hormone free, dry aged, premium Tasmanian beef including brands from Cape Grim, Greenhams, Clover Country, King Island and Flinders Island amongst others. Legislation in Tasmania against the use of hormone growth promotants and antibiotics in red meat production combined with Tasmanian graziers’ focus on free-range grass fed cattle produces happy animals and superior quality meat. A flexible pricing structure and side dishes designed around fresh, local produce allow guests to create the dining experience they desire. Also sporting a well-priced wine list with a heavy emphasis on local Tasmanian wines with some full-bodied reds thrown in for good measure. An energetic atmosphere and friendly professional service completes the Black Cow offering. This casual Bistro style has been a hit with the local community as well as visitors so reservations are essential. A private wine room offers dining for up to 12 guests for those important dinners and negotiations. Open 7 nights a week from 5:30pm to late. The Black Cow logo has been inspired by the amazing ancient artworks in the Lascaux Caves in France. Carbon dating indicates that these paintings are more than 17,000 years old. Black Cow, the name, is a tribute to the Bos Genus… Historically the cow has been important to many cultures. It has been seen and worshiped as a symbol of contentedness, fecundity, the passive yet creative and generative powers of nature, patience, nourishment, abundance, fertility and equifinality. It is also, of course, an excellent source of protein.

“Steak, glorious steak...”
Reviewed 3 May 2014

Simply brilliant steaks [& they have other stuff as well]. But back to the steaks, simply grand. Fantastic beer & wine list with some of the best service we have had in Launceston; mind you at the prices it would want to be! That aside for a great experience, special occasion, carnivorous extravaganza you can't get much better. Enjoy.

“Best meal in Tassie!”
Reviewed 28 April 2014

Our dinner at Black Cow Bistro was one of the best meals we had in Tassie over our 10 day trip. There is a good selection of steak cuts which will be cooked to your liking. That wonderful char grill flavour is present and my Scotch fillet was dripping in Pairs Butter. The large hand cut chips were crunchy & hot and the honey carrots were delicious. All accompanied with a rich Shiraz recommended by the Sommelier. Our dessert was a frozen caramel slice and has to be tasted to be believed. Divine!
This restaurant is busy and the tables are placed very close together. Unfortunately for my partner the wait staff kept bumping into the back of his chair as they rounded the corner to & from the kitchen - that's how tightly the tables are packed in but it is worth it to eat their food. Another bonus for us was being able to walk back to our hotel from this lovely restaurant. If we visit Launceston again we will be sure to eat here again.

“Awesome Tassie steak”
Reviewed 25 April 2014

Wonderful food with your choice of regional Tassie beef to be cooked to perfection. Best steak I've eaten was there (eye fillet).

Great food but it's a tight space which can be distracting if you like something more relaxed (try their sister restaurant Stillwater for a more spacious relaxed atmosphere).

Five thumbs up

“Good food and atmosphere but make sure you book!”
Reviewed 25 April 2014

It's good to find a quality restaurant that opens at 5.30 for those of us who like an early night. We'd heard that this is The Place to Go if you like a perfectly cooked steak - it certainly met our expectations. We had ciabatta with olive oil/balsamic vinegar for starters then I had Scotch fillet with Paris Butter, he had porterhouse with mixed peppercorn sauce. Both steaks were perfectly cooked. The baby carrots we'd ordered as a side were delicious. The honey mushrooms with thyme and garlic were disappointing, too bland. Meals and drinks a bit pricey but we'd expected that. The only irritation we had was being interrupted in the middle of a conversation to be asked if we were enjoying our meal.

Get the rib eye on the bone and you will seriously never be the same again. Best steak and service I've ever had! Dessert was excellent too.
