We discovered The Prickly Cactus on our first visit to Tasmania at the end of 2001.
We have eaten here on every visit since, and love the atmosphere and authentic Mexican cuisine.
We ate here again last night, and were impressed once more by the food & staff.
We were lucky to get a table, having left it fairly late to book (Tuesday this week) - and couldn't get the time we wanted as they were fully booked, however, we were offered an earlier time, with which we were able to work.
The size of the cob as a starter was disappointing (a little on the small side), however, everything else was perfect.
In regards to other comments relating to the policy of a minimum of a main meal per person, one of our group only wanted a starter, and was informed that she could have a double serve, for an extra charge (not sure how much extra was charged as I didn't see the bill at the end of the night). She was happy with that.
I was informed that the total bill was $141.50 for 5 people (including drinks), which is extraordinary value considering the price of a meal these days.
Cannot recommend highly enough.

service was good to start off with. As a group we felt that the ''cob'' loaf was a bit laughable considering it was the size of a supermarket bun and overcooked. Enchilada could have had more flavour and there are no salt and pepper shakers on tables??.1st place I have ever been where you MUST have a main meal. Happy I tried it but probably wont be back

We were a little hesitant about eating here after reading some of the reviews about the service here, but took the chance anyway because the menu looked so good. Well - we don't know what those reviews were on about, because we found the service really great - they couldn't do enough for us!! And we didn't have a booking. Food lived up to our expectations - especially delicious was the cactus bread, the side dishes on the mains and the donuts.

We went here as a group of 4 on a Sunday night on a recommendation from friends. Not much is open on a Sunday night in Launceston.
The restaurant opens at 5:30 for service and we walked in and found one of the staff eating. The restaurant was completely empty. We were asked if we had a reservation. When we said no, the girl who was eating casually pointed to the table with her mouth full and said we could sit on the table next to her. She got up from her meal and got us some menus. There was no explanation of specials or if there were any "conditions". We were looking at the menu to find that to eat there you had to order a main course. You cannot order 2 starters or a starter and a dessert. We had been at a conference all weekend and had been fed like queens at the Grand Chancellor around the corner, so only wanted something small. When we asked about the ordering conditions we asked if we would be charge a mains price if we ordered a starter. The response was "no". So we asked her to clarify. She said, you must order a main. No explanation why and in the rudest manner possible. I have eaten in restaurants all over the world and never have I been told that I have to order a main course or I can't eat somewhere. Needless to say we did not eat here. We walked out and went to the Black Cow Bistro across the road where we spent twice as much as we would have at this poor excuse for a dining establishment. They kissed goodbye $100 cheque.
