Hotel Grand Chancellor Launceston
Ranked #11 of 30 Hotels in Launceston
Reviewed 5 November 2012

The hotel was ideally located in Launceston with all the shopping and parks close by.

We had a superior room which was spacious, very clean and had superb beds (2 queen sized). Parking could be a problem if you were trying to park during work hours as the car park is open to the public to pay for all day parking, but it soon clears once workers start to leave.

The restaurant serves a delightful breakfast - it can be a good idea to eat there if you are an early starter as Launceston doesn't wake up so early.

Check in brought the first surprise - no assistance with luggage, find a trolley & do it yourself from the carpark to the fifth floor! Well, we managed even though we are getting on in years & husband is still recovering from a recent stroke. (At this point we also learned that car parking was charged at $6.00 per day - cheap enough but totally unexpected.) Once in the room we were somewhat baffled by the light switches & the air conditioning unit. A phone call to reception clarified the first but further assistance had to be sought for the air conditioner which proved to be unplugged, the plug located beneath the desk which would have been impossible for either of us to reach! Even the youthful housemaid had some difficulty with it. A request to have one of the curtains replaced on its track was left at reception at 6pm as we went out for dinner; on our return this had not been attended to & as outside street lighting was a problem a further call to reception was met with the response that maintenance would attend to it the following morning as no-one was then available. We had specifically booked a refurbished room & the one plus was a really comfortable bed with good pillows. However, the bathroom was a worry. A fixed clear glass wall for the shower recess was without safety markings & because of the inadequate lighting, my husband walked straight into it! There was also a tiny step up into the shower area which was not delineated in any way. No bathrobes, no disposable shower cap & only one hand towel for two people - my personal pet hate in hotels! Towel rails were also inadequate with only those for bath towels at the end of the shower recess, nowhere for gowns or hand towels. The toilet paper provided was atrocious - the worst quality I have ever encountered anywhere! No cleaning brush either. We stayed four nights & the last room service did not even provide a bath mat. In the bedroom the reading light switches were fixed too high to reach so one was forced to get out of bed to turn the lights off - how mad is that? Drapes were quite inadequate to provide good blockout at night. No explanation was provided on checking in re: ordering buffet breakfast prior to 10pm the night before to save $5.00 on the cost, which was $25.00 per head. Breakfast was ok but the family dinner we gathered for the night before we all departed was very average, certainly not worth the cost. Sunday morning at 10.30am the foyer loos were absolutely disgusting. They are certainly in dire need of refurbishing but a thorough clean would make a difference & there would seem to be no excuse for their condition on Sunday morning. Checking out was like joining a queue in a supermarket - as many as ten people standing in line with only one person at the desk. It would appear that this hotel is being run with totally inadequate staffing numbers - probably concentrating on Asian tour groups & disregarding individual travellers. Our family group - mostly from the mainland - would certainly not book this hotel in future, despite its central location.

My husband and I stayed in a refurbished room mid week on the third floor and found the room clean, bed lovely and comfortable, and bathroom nice. However, when checking in, I felt a little like I was waiting at a deli counter in a super market. After a few minutes of waiting, another staff member came out and called a hearty "whos next" while staring into the distance. When checking in, our credit card was taken and room number given along with the floor level, end of checkin. The parking cost was not explained, no information on breakfast / dinner services or that we could save if we booked in our breakfast through the front counter, no smile, nothing besides taking the credit card and giving us our room access card. The cleaners were vacuuming the halls at 8:00am, and there was a lot of movement from 7am from other guests, waking me up early. I got the impression that a lot of the guests were there on business, and did not feel that this hotel catered for our stay or provided us with any information to help our stay be more enjoyable.

Room Tip: Level one did smell like a laundry, level three mid week was pleasant

A little old fashioned but still great rooms & good value for money.
Bathroom is not great & view from our room was the carpark - but that aside the room was clean & spacious.
Can hear noises from adjacent rooms & floor above.

We only stayed here one night after flying in late from Perth. The building itself has a certain quaint charm. Check in was fast, friendly and efficient. The room itself was fairly basic but adequate. The furnishings are a little tired but I wouldn't say shabby. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom basic but adequate. Breakfast was reasonably priced and fairly good. All in all a reasonable hotel for a reasonable price.

Stayed here for three days with my daughter in September while visiting relatives. The twin bed room was pretty standard with two comfy double beds, flatscreen tv and fairly dated furnishings. The bathroom was a good size but the shower over bath arrangement had mouldy grouting and a general old feel about it. Staff were efficient at check in/out, and giving directions, but not overly friendly. The hotel is very centrally located with just a short stroll to the main shopping area and bars/restaurants.

Stayed at this hotel for 6 nights for an organized event. Very disappointed that the room rates organized were more expensive than online rates offered. Expensive but poor wifi (should be free in this day and age), tired rooms, no working a/c, short staffed in restaurant and bar. Staff were helpful and pleasant, location is good but overall disappointing.
