“Rude and unhelpful”
Reviewed 18 March 2014 via mobile

Unfortunately we had an extremely unpleasant experience. We arrived at 9.30 at night (having advised this at time of booking) from a very wet night at Day on the Green. We drove into the car park but it was obvious the car park was full, so being cold and wet we parked a block and a half away. No problem, we didn't mention we couldn't get into the car park. Why complain, we weren't that far away.

Arriving in our room at 9.45 we attempted to order room service but the phone with buttons to connect various facilities in the hotel was completely dead. No problem, I went to reception to order and they sent me to the bar. An extremely rude woman took some time to serve me and by then it was 2 minutes past 10. She said "no, kitchen closed", and started to serve someone else.
Eventually a cold pizza, salad, 2 sets of knives and forks and one plate arrived.

Weirdly hot air was being pumped in through air conditioning but an enormous loud fan in the corner was trying to keep the room at 18 degrees! Great for the power usage. Maybe that's why it was $$$.

Unfortunately I had to ring reception from my mobile the next morning to find the hair dryer.  All bad luck but to cap it off, reception refused to take $6.00 off our bill for a car park we didn't use. They explained we should have told them the night before and said it wasn't possible to refund!

I've now been charged at our local post office $15.50 for the return of an iPhone  mobile phone charger I stupidly left behind.

Having spent 14 years running a large tourism business in this State I have never struck such rudeness and the inability to help anywhere else in Tasmania.

Very pleasant 4 star hotel located in central downtown Launceston. Rooms reasonably sized with lounge chairs and desk. Clean and comfortable with good bars and restaurant. Plenty of parking is available for a very small fee. In many ways this is a typical 5 star but without the trimmings like concierge, baggage handling etc. It is priced accordingly. Staff are friendly and service is very good.
FOR:
Location
Nicely appointed rooms
Good restaurant
AGAINST:
It appears that the building’s air con is not being maintained. We had a portable air conditioner and it was way to loud.

Stayed 2 nights in March. Staff welcoming and efficient. Breakfast good. Location good. Room on 1st floor horrendous. Room is large but very tired. Cold water tap in bathroom barely working, stand along air conditioning in corner of room very noisy. Window overlooked the the exhaust outlets for the ground floor kitchen and also very noisy and ran 24/7.. This room should not be used to accommodate guests. Extremely disappointed.

Room Tip: Avoid first floor rooms in particular room 1026.

Outwardly this is very attractive hotel, unfortunately first appearances can be deceiving. The hotel is in need of refurbishment.
Grubby rooms, poor paintwork, stained landing carpets, also our room was over the kitchen area and was very noisy.
The airconditioning didn't work, a portable unit was supplied, this just made the noise louder. The bathroom toilet area of the room are old fashioned but adequate.
The lobby, bar, and restaurant areas were ok, the staff very helpfull. Strangely there is a parking charge levied for the use of the hotels own car park.
We asked for and got a partial refund for putting up with a noisy room, do the same if you are given this poor 1st floor room. Or better still find somewhere else.
I understand that this hotel is due for major refurbishment, the sooner the better.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the kitchen, or find another hotel.

Booked a superior room, which was very spacious and comfortable enough with a 2-seat lounge, work desk and large kind size bed, agree with other reviewers that its not overly "Grand" but for a 2-night stay it was perfectly fine. The location is ideal, a short walk to restaurants and shops. Breakfast was fine, nothing to rave about, but no complaints either and service was also fine. I'd probably stay again, only in the renovated rooms though.

Recently stayed for 4 nights in a twin queen bedded room. Spacious room with small desk and table, great lobby bar serving alcohol and very good coffees. Breakfast, lunch and dinner available in lobby restaurant.
Staff are very friendly and obliging.
Very comfortable beds and bedding, clean and reasonable quiet.

My boyf took me here for my Christmas present. We stayed in an un refurbished room on the first floor which I had no problem with, walked in the door and yes a little tired, but I was not too fussed. Shower was ok, yeah the air con is a stand alone unit in the corner but still not bothered by that really. We settled in and then realised in the background the incessant noise of what looked to be four or five exhaust fans on a rooftop about 1-5m directly adjacent to the window. We rang reception who confirmed it was the kitchen exhaust and basically said that it was not going to stop and there was nothing they could do. It was very very loud. I would suggest going elsewhere otherwise be prepared for the noise. To the operators. .this is not a place you should be placing paying customers to sleep. The room should be closed for use or the exhaust fans/windows acoustically treated.
