Description: Local Food, local wine, local talent.... Stillwater's food and wine philosophy: Our food is fresh, grown locally by passionate producers who rely on the attributes of our natural environment. Our State regulations keep the modification out of our genetics, the artificial out of our hormones and the free in our ranging animals. We know grass fed, antibiotic free, natural, happy animals make better meat....even if they aren't 'super sized'. Our water is clean, sourced from Cape Grim on Tasmania's North West Coast, home of the cleanest air on the planet. Our wines flow from around the State but being located in the Tamar Valley means Stillwater is a cornerstone for the local vignerons hosting a list that showcases the highly respected local tipples. Stillwater Partners: The Stillwater owner partnership is home grown as well, raised in a community that nurtures its youth and cares about its neighbours. Stillwater Restaurant: Being fortunate enough to live and work in one of the most beautiful places on the planet is one of the bonuses for the team at Stillwater River Cafe, Restaurant and Wine Bar. Situated in the historic Ritchie's Mill at the mouth of the Cataract Gorge on the banks of the Tamar River in Launceston, Tasmania the restaurant glows with the authentic warmth only an 1830's timber building can offer. The casually elegant ambiance ensures guests feel welcome and comfortable whether enjoying a casual breakfast, corporate lunch, special dinner, a glass of wine after work or just a coffee. Comprised of a number of spaces Stillwater has a main dining room that seats guests comfortably amongst the Oregon timber beams and Kauri pine floors and the original bluestone wine cellar full of character as well as fabulous wines. On fine days the outdoor courtyard offers views overlooking the Tamar River and the Wine Bar adjacent to the entrance is a great retreat for a bar snack and cocktail. Stillwater is open 7 days a week for breakfast and lunch and Tuesday* through Saturday for our indulgent evening menu (*subject to winter hours), reservations are highly recommended. A vibrant centre of the local community, Stillwater has achieved many hospitality, wine and business awards over the years from local to National for all aspects of the business. Stillwater Providore: The food theme continues throughout the building with The Providore above Stillwater showcasing our fabulous local produce in a deli and food shop alongside talented local arts, craft and homewares.

“Great Food & Experience, Need Reservations”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 December 2013

We stopped by here when it opened for the day. They claimed they were booked up. After a similar experience with their sister resturant Black Cow, they fit us in right then. We had a fabulous meal and the service was exceptional. The food was a little pricey, but not outrageous. Great wine list. Make sure you have reservations first, however, by the time we left 1.5 hours later, about half of the tables were empty. Nice view of the river.

“Brilliant food in a pretty setting”

Just arrived in town and randomly found this place. Service was excellent and the food, whilst not cheap ($45-50 for main course, $20 a dessert) was absolutely delicious.

“a little bit shocked by the bad experience, but maybe it was a lunchtime glitch?”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 November 2013

Booked in to Stillwater as I wanted to give my dear friend a beautiful lunch. Stillwater's reputation preceded it and I expected something quite special.

We ordered fizz to start with. My measure was (quite visibly) short. We decided to share a starter, and asked for an additional plate. It was dirty, had old dried caked-in food stuck to it, had to be sent back and replaced. The trout in the salad had quite a vicious, at least inch-long, bone in it. We ordered the 'wrap of lamb', thinking we would get a nice lamb dish, as well as side orders to accompany it. We were delivered shredded lamb wrapped in a crepe (and surely no need for the potato side order, then?). We commented on the confusion to our waitress and were told "oh, people make that mistake all the time". Why not be a little clearer on the menu, then, about this finger-food?

I was mortified for the restaurant, but also embarrassed as the restaurant was my choice and it was far from the lunch I had been led to expect (and hardly 'fine dining' by anybody's standards). The lunch menu doesn't seem to know quite what it wants to be...casual dining? 'Fast' food? But just be warned that it's 'fish 'n chips', 'wraps 'n burgers' and 'no-tablecloth' brasserie fare at what can only be described as eye-watering prices.

To their credit, when I complained they deducted the two glasses of fizz, "for the short measure" (hence the two stars) with not a word of apology for the rest, and certainly not short on attitude.

The bill came to around AUD$160 (it was just shy of AUD$200 before the two glasses of wine were deducted), not including the tip, and I have to say that these prices for this quality of food and this type of service is truly, as another reviewer puts it, more than a little "cheeky".

Maybe dinner is a different matter. Everybody I have asked speaks of their dinner service in glowing terms, and I may yet give it a shot. It may be a much better experience. Certainly the tasting menu looks interesting.

But save your money and have lunch elsewhere!

Dear Whitley Local,
I am so sorry we did not live up to your expectations for your recent luncheon and spoiled the impression you wanted to leave your friend. We endeavour to communicate as much as possible that we offer a casual cafe style during the day and at night ramp up to our indulgent culinary experience. As you can imagine we have to offer what the market wants an a more causal day time menu is it. We do offer some lovely specials during the day and have our oysters and other treats like our 'tuna on toast' which translates into our house made ciabatta with goats cheese, pea and wasabi spread topped with ceviche style marinated fresh tuna cubes so try to keep it upbeat and tasty with a few favourites like our lamb wrap not able to leave our menu due to customer demand, we tried it once and nearly had a revolution on our hands. I really hope you will give our evening service a try, that is the experience I think you were looking for. Apologies again for disappointing you.

“Must visit if you're in Launceston!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 November 2013

We visited Stillwater last week and had the degustation menu with matching wines - what a great experience! We had heard great things about Stillwater and they were all true. The service truly is outstanding, second to none from when you walk in the door to when you leave. The information provided about the food and wine is excellent too. The only slight thing was that both my husband and I had eaten wallaby three times on our Tasmania trip and the wallaby dish at Stillwater was our least favourite - it had far too little flavour and the pieces were quite small and a touch overcooked. If I went again I'd prefer a seafood dish over the wallaby. Everything else was outstanding and for a special occasion I'd definitely recommend the degustation and wines!

“Book ahead or you might miss out”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 November 2013 via mobile

We were staying opposite this restaurant which by all accounts is one of the best. We wandered in three nights in a row, only to be told it was fully booked. Our schedule did not allow us to be precise about when we might be able to get back into town so we lucked out. The morning coffees were great and the view spectacular so, if you can, book ahead to be sure.
