Booked on Wotif as a mystery deal - was a bit concerned having read the reviews - but it was great.

Location on Lydiard St perfect. Room on first floor was well appointed and very nice. Excellent hot chocolate included on tea/coffee tray which I like (although no complementary biscuits...). Free continental breakfast was plenty to set us up for the day - proper coffee - great cereal selection including bircher muesli and fruit compote - fruit/wholegrain/white toast with a variety of spreads and also english muffins. Would definately stay here again.

Didn't drive so can't comment on the parking situation and whether there is free parking in the vicinity.

Ansonia is a fantastic little B & B in the heart of Ballarat. Staff were very friendly, rooms were very clean and comfortable. We enjoyed a big breakfast the following morning, and found this to be a no stress stay. Would recommend to anyone, and will be back again next time!

Regardless of other reviews we really loved our stay here,
I did book on wotif and it was a Mystery deal (because it seemed a bit of fun!).
when I found out where we were staying we were excited!
It was a lovely place. Yes we had to walk up stairs to our room...big deal!!
Ive stayed in boutique Hotels in Glasgow and Paris and you have to walk up stairs there also! its part of the character of these old buildings.
It was a lovely old building, plenty of character and charm, The ceilings where lovely and high, the rooms clean and well presented. You are close to the main street and restaurants etc.
To use and sleep in for our weekend away it was perfect.

Stayed here one night to break up trip to grampians. Small hotel, service very old fashioned, not in a good way. Reception staff not exactly friendly, it's more like a motel than the self described boutique hotel. Walking to room the stairs were dirty ( no lift ) and paint coming off evident everywhere you looked. Room was on first floor, view non existent, looks out onto rear of another building. Found bed terribly uncomfortable. Floorboards squeak everywhere u walk!
Breakfast next day was interesting, bread was the cardboard variety from the supermarket. Hot food served in two bain Marie's was cold. As previous reviews remarked parking is paid street parking which was I hour from 9 am. Would be a nightmare if you were staying more than one night. Checkout is 10 am, asked about a small extension to 11 and male staff member was a tad taken aback saying we don't normally allow that!!! Most hotels checkout is 11am Building itself has lots character and the potential to turn the Ansonia into the boutique hotel it desires to be is certainly there, just needs a good polish.

This is a review from my friend:

The front window is not well covered so when people walk past they can see in.
People smoking in the courtyard pretty much sat at your door.
The shower head broke whilst in shower.
Could hear everything in the rooms around.

It was a nice room the bed was comfortable but not nice enough due to points above.

Room Tip: Avoid the ground floor rooms unless you like people watching.

Sharing a business 'ladies long lunch' at The Ansonia on Lydiard was a pleasure. We don't catch up often so it was great to have an environment that makes you feel 'special' and that invites conversation without too much ambient noise. The Ansonia's rich heritage architecture, sophisticated but comfortable decor, and crisp restaurant style make sitting here with friends and colleagues a true Ballarat experience. The lunch menu is 'light and tight' priced on average around $14-$16 dollars it is excellent value...if not a little too predictable. Highly professional service by the manager gave our lunch a sophisticated feel, although wait staff could be a little more polished. The wine menu fits the purse. The restaurant is without street view so it is all too easy to overlook as a lunch venue. My suggestion is DON'T. The Ansonia on Lydiard is a great place for a relaxed and excellent lunch.

We stayed one night, passing through as part of a road trip. It was a negative experience from the beginning. It had been a long day travelling and we could not find the hotel. We had driven the length of The Great Ocean Road with it's incredible scenery and arrived just after dark. There were no outside lights and we drove past 3 times before we called to ask for directions. We were told that it was opposite the theatre which did not help as it had no light either. When we finally saw it, we had to find a parking spot as there is no onsite parking having being built in 1852. The stables were being used for other purposes. There was no parking anywhere. By shear luck, we caught a spot as someone drove out. We asked reception about the 1 hour parking spot we found and were told we would have to move by 9 the next morning. We asked what happens if you stay 2 nights. An uncaring shrug was the response. My advice would be if holidaying in Ballarat, stay outside the CBD.
Now for the room. It certainly had character. The ceiling was very high but the walls were close together. The bed took up most of the floor space. It gave the impression of sleeping in a chimney. The floor boards creaked atrociously. If you get up during the night, you can guarantee that you will awaken your spouse. That is if they are not awake already from the cold wind making moaning sounds through the window. It was either that or a resident ghost. I also found that the wooden Venetian blinds let in an inordinate amount of light.
The en-suite bathroom had modern fittings with a huge deep bath and overhead shower with the provision of a shower curtain. The height of the bath would make it impossible for an elderly or infirm person to use. It is really dangerous.
The best part of our stay was the sense of history about the building, it is a wonderful atmosphere, and breakfast. The coffee was great and the food was cooked to perfection.
