Best Japanese I've had so far. Friendly staff, quick service and fantastic fresh food. If you like Japanese food and you're around it's a Must.

“Best Japanese ever!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 July 2012

Simply the best Japanese I have eaten in this country. This restaurant would be out of place in any major capital city. Food, service, atmosphere all were fantastic. Settled on the course menu "Dai Kambei". Highlights have to be the chawan mushi, black cod, wagyu, and finished off with black sesame icecream. Would holiday in Ballarat again just for this food.

Dined here on a Saturday night food fabulous, only down side was that you can only choose the one banquet on a Friday /Saturday . Definately will go back mid week to try their other dishes

“A regional surprise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 June 2012

We have been to this restaurant a few times since it opened... gone are the days when you could just walk in. Word has spread and my advice would be to book ahead.
Friday and Saturday nights are set menu only - and it is a fantastic meal with three cold appetisers, an entree then main with rice and miso. The kids are treated to a bento box with sashimi, tempura, teriyaki and rice... good enough for grownups.
The sake tasting was very interesting although the Umeshu is always a favourite.
Always a great meal, we have never been disappointed.

“Fantastic Japanese food and great service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 June 2012

We visited Kambei in a group of 6 and walked into a warm, welcoming restaurant on a cold Ballarat day to celebrate a family birthday and we were not disappointed.

We decided on four of the smaller set menu offerings, including one for a vegetarian and one without the sashimi course and two of the larger set menus so that we could share some of the different dishes.

This gave us more than enough of everything for 6 healthy appetites and each course provided a generous sample - starters followed by sashimi or vegetarian options, a plate of tempura vegetables and a perfect prawn, a main serve of fish of the day, miso soup and rice. The large menus included black cod, waygu beef and a delicious desert. The Chawanmushi was outstanding as was the tempura eggplant and the black cod was deliciously rich. Pickled vegetables accompanied each course, together with various dipping sauces- a real banquet.

We paid around $50 a head including drinks - so outstanding value for money.

The service was quiet and efficient with plenty of explanation of dishes and the option of changing the set menu to suit individual tastes.

I would strongly recommend this outstanding regional restaurant - well worth considering if you are visiting surrounding attractions of Ballarat including Sovereign Hill which is just down the road from Kambei. Also this could be a great starting point for people interested in more traditional Japanese food.
