I took my wife and her parents to the Old Port of Echuca and booked into Oscar W's for dinner on the first night. The fact that I cannot recall much of what any of us ate, tells me that it was not particularly exceptional, despite it being quite an upmarket restaurant price wise.
The fact that a young couple with two children were sitting at the table next to us and their children were screaming and throwing crayons around didn't help us to enjoy our experience. That sort of behaviour I expect in McDonald's, not somewhere I am paying $400 for dinner. The view is fine, the food ok, but rather overpriced for what you end up with.

This restaurant has been here for many years and still offers a great ambience with delightful food and local Victorian wines, amongst others. Relax with a light lunch and coffee while watching the paddle steamers up and down the river, or spend an evening wining and dining and you will be looked after by the wait staff very well.

We dined here last saturday night and had a great night out.

We arrived early for our booking so that we could enjoy a drink (delicious camparti spritz) in their private outdoor bar area that overlooks the Murray. It was really lovely & relaxing sitting outside watching the boats pass on the river.

We were then shown to our table for two, inside, right by the window. We enjoyed yabby tortellini and murray cod cakes for starters. For mains we both had steak specials that were cooked perfectly and came with some veggies and jus.

Service was very friendly and efficient.

The wine list by the glass was varied and interesting. We enjoyed a spanish red by the glass made by an Aussie / Spanish winemaker from around echuca.

We were quite full after 2 courses so just shared the petit fours for dessert.

As it started getting dark we realised that some of the river red gums outside were lit up for a nice effect. Later on in the night a Kookaburra visited right outside the window.

Overall, a great night out in Echuca.

Beautiful setting overlooking the river. The service was good as we went mid week and out of season. For the price, we expected the food to be far better.

After reading the AGFG, We visited Echuca last weekend and after our bad experience we had last time about 18 months ago, I must say it had been totally different experience this time round. We were welcome and had a few drinks in the lounge and taken to our table. Waiters lacked attention to detail. I personally think they should check for watermarks before serving customers, even change wine glasses after having a red to white. Totally different story about the food. We had the yabby tortellini, the rabbit rillettes and the quail which was exceptionally well balanced in flavours. For main we had the suckling pig, roo, spring lamb, which again was exceptionally good. for sweets, we all had the bread and butter pudding, which again we had last time and this time round was very delicate in flavours and perfect.
Kudos to the chef that took over. Sam M
