“Mixed. Generally Good service, ok food, expensive, noisy, crammed”
Reviewed 2 December 2013

First impressions, I agree with some of the other reviewers. For the price-point the tables are too close together, and there are clearly too many covers at once. This also makes the place very noisy and not intimate.

We arrived at 8pm to find 2 or 3 small children running about - not what I expect in a $100 a head restaurant, and although more the fault of the fool in the luminous green jacket and his wife who were letting them run about, the staff shoud have said something. Luckily they departed within 20 minutes.

The first wine we ordered was pretty marmite, and my wife really didnt like it. The staff were find about this and the somelier recommended another wine. The wine we had ordered was $45 (we had not taken the advice of an $80 bottle of wine on the grounds we didnt want to spend that much). I was annoyed when the bill came to find the alternative wine suggested was $80.

When I mentioned this the manageress checked it out and apologised, stating this was an hnest mistake and he had meant to suggest a $65 bottle. They refunded but this was still a $20 more bottle?!

The food was nice, no complaints there. Not cheap, and needs to not pack 'em in so much at this price point (3 starters, 1 main, 1 bottle of wine, over $200 for 2 people.

“Disappointing food great service”
Reviewed 19 November 2013 via mobile

We had not been there for quite some time, but as the owners had just won the prestigious Opera House food contract,I was not surprised to see the restaurant fully booked on a Tuesday night.Lovely atmosphere, lovely view of the sunset over the bay, lovely waiting staff. But the food was not up to scratch.......my avocado in an otherwise nice crab salad ,was not ripe and so tasted of nothing and had a very unpleasant texture....no excuse for that, even the lowliest breakfast places have properly ripe avocados. My special tartare of fillet of beef was downright bad.....coarsely chopped and bound with a very vinegary sauce, salty crisp potato slices done like packet chips, and more salty potato foam on the side.It was very hard to ignore the slimy texture of the tartare. Not a good dish.Other food portions were very small, and the main of hubby's (fish) was very overcooked. And the deserts were plain boring and pedestrian .Where were the new season's berries, for example,or something more interesting than panna cotta(badly done)and affogatto .
We did enjoy the evening, but the food was not the reason. If I were a teacher I'd give it a 7 and " could do better" as a comment.

“Very professional service & food”
Reviewed 17 November 2013

Attended with 12 others for a team dinner. The big round table for a start was a big plus--much easier to converse around the table. The service was very professional--last minute changes to our numbers were dealt with without fuss. The food & wine waiting was discreet but always there when you needed it. The food was excellent--lots of different dishes were tried around our table, and everyone was very positive. The restaurant setting is very nice--the big balcony overlooking the bay is a perfect place for the predinner drinks. Overall, the Stokehouse is a very professionally run operation, that has maintained its standards over many years. An excellent night out.
